A popular character on Coronation Street is facing a dramatic departure. Show boss Iain MacLeod hinted that a character will be ‘sacrificed’ as part of a future storyline.
The soap opera is nearing its 65th anniversary, and MacLeod discussed the importance of celebrating this significant achievement.
ITV’s head of continuing drama, MacLeod, told the Mirror that big events in soap operas often require a dramatic consequence – a ‘sacrifice,’ as he put it.
“It’s going to be shocking. There will be lots of trauma, lots of drama, lots of twists.”
He didn’t reveal who’s in danger, leaving viewers to guess if Jenny Connor or Billy Mayhew will be leaving soon, or if someone else will face a tragic fate.

MacLeod also pointed out that the most impactful character departures often involve those we’ve grown to love the most.
He explained that producers often consider whether a character’s departure would resonate with viewers, but they also have to think about how it would affect the show’s overall storylines and future possibilities.
The executive producer described the team’s decision-making process for major choices, saying they take the responsibility seriously and spend a lot of time discussing and debating options.
Let me tell you, things get heated behind the scenes when we’re mapping out the story – it’s always a passionate debate. And right now, as we’re developing this particular arc, it’s no exception. We’re really pushing each other, and sparks are definitely flying!

With Eva Price, played by Catherine Tyldesley, coming back as the new owner of The Rovers Return pub, producer Iain MacLeod has hinted that more well-known characters from the show’s past will be returning soon.
“All of it is feeding into this crossover episode we are doing in January,” added Iain.
“It’s going to get bigger and bigger. Things will peak in a big way.”
Coronation Street and Emmerdale are joining forces for a special event to celebrate the world of soap operas.
