Robert Redford’s Grandkids Share Rare Photos After His Death

For seven people, Robert Redford was simply Grandpa.

After the acclaimed actor passed away at 89 on September 16th, his grandchildren honored him online by posting previously unseen family pictures.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Conor Schlosser, son of Shauna Redford and Eric Schlosser, described his grandfather as a beloved family member, saying, ‘He was larger than life to the world, but to his family, he was simply that…family.’ He concluded with, ‘Rest in peace, Grandpa.’

The 33-year-old shared photos of himself with the *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* actor enjoying activities like horseback riding, opening gifts, having dessert, and playing golf. He also asked anyone with a favorite memory of the actor to send it to him privately, as he’s collecting stories.

Lena Redford, the daughter of Robert’s late son James and his wife Kyle, also posted photos of herself horseback riding with her grandfather. She shared pictures of them enjoying heartwarming moments with family and accompanied the post with a red heart emoji.

For seven people, Robert Redford was simply Grandpa.

After the acclaimed actor passed away at 89 on September 16th, his grandchildren shared previously unpublished family photos as a tribute.

Robert was a larger-than-life figure to many, but to his family, he was simply a beloved family member,” his grandson, Conor Schlosser, shared on Instagram. “Rest in peace, Grandpa.” Conor is the son of Robert’s daughter, Shauna Redford, and Eric Schlosser.

The 33-year-old shared photos of himself with the *Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid* actor enjoying activities like horseback riding, opening gifts, eating dessert, and playing golf. He also asked anyone with a cherished memory of the actor to send it to him privately, as he’s collecting stories.

Robert Redford clearly loved spending time with his family on horseback. His granddaughter, Lena Redford, and her mother, Kyle Redford, also shared photos of their horseback riding adventures and heartwarming family moments.

Lena shared photos on Instagram with a red heart emoji and added to her Stories that he “Taught me so much.” She then playfully referenced his favorite hat brand, saying he “Had us all in Kangol.”

The 29-year-old also shared her thoughts on what a meeting between the actor from *The Sting* and her father-who passed away in 2020 at 58 after a battle with bile duct cancer-might be like.

She shared a photo of her dad and son on Instagram, writing, “I imagine they’re riding amazing horses in heaven.”

Despite a long and successful career as an actor and filmmaker, Robert Redford’s grandchildren didn’t know about his fame for many years. His grandson, Dylan Redford, 34, once shared with him the story of when he first realized how famous his grandfather was.

Dylan recalled a specific memory from fourth grade during a 2016 interview with the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. He remembered being confused and surprised when Robert came to school for Grandparents’ Day, wondering why everyone was so fascinated by his grandfather.

He recalled a girl once giving him a note, explaining it was from her grandmother, meant to be passed from him to his dad, and then to *his* grandfather. He jokingly wondered if all grandparents were communicating secretly, and if he was missing some kind of family tradition.

This was also the first time Robert-who is father to the late Scott Redford and Amy Redford with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen-realized his grandchildren were getting a glimpse into this side of his life.

He chuckled, recalling a Grandparents’ Day when it hit him: his children, Dylan and Lena, didn’t realize the situation. He confessed, “They were probably confused, wondering why I was at Grandparents’ Day but wasn’t acting like a grandparent – more like a celebrity.”

Dylan explained that for him and his family, their grandfather’s fame was never important. He shared, “Lena, my cousins, and I all feel incredibly lucky to have you in our lives – someone who’s so open, honest, and always willing to share advice and stories.” He stressed that to them, their grandfather was, first and foremost, family.

He admired how Robert – who was married to Sibylle Szaggars from 2009 until he passed away – successfully kept his personal life private. He commented, “It always felt like there was the public world doing its thing, and then there was your family, which felt truly special. You clearly worked hard to create that.”
