Horror movies filmed as if they’re found footage – starting with films like *Cannibal Holocaust* in 1980 and becoming widely popular with *The Blair Witch Project* in 1999 – are often incredibly scary. Many films have used this style, including *Paranormal Activity* and *As Above, So Below*. A particularly well-received monster movie from 2008, which earned a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, has just been added to Paramount+. However, finding its even better sequel on the platform requires a little searching.
The 2008 monster movie Cloverfield, directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J.J. Abrams, is now available on Paramount+. The film follows a group of friends trying to escape a giant monster attack in New York City, all captured through a shaky handheld camera. Cloverfield was a big hit when it came out and led to a successful sequel, 10 Cloverfield Lane, in 2016. While 10 Cloverfield Lane isn’t on Paramount+, you can watch it on Prime Video, MGM+, and AMC+.
Why You Should Watch Cloverfield
The film *Cloverfield* is a standout example of found footage filmmaking. While its shaky, first-person camera work initially caused motion sickness for some viewers – even earning the nickname “the *Cloverfield* Illness” and prompting theater warnings – this style effectively puts the audience right in the middle of the terrifying and chaotic action. This immersive perspective, combined with the film’s clever choice to only *show* glimpses of the creature, builds incredible suspense and lets the audience’s imagination fill in the rest, making *Cloverfield* a truly effective creature feature.
Combining a captivating story with a clever and intriguing marketing campaign, *Cloverfield* quickly became a hit and stands out as one of director Matt Reeves’ best films. Made on a $25 million budget, it earned $172 million worldwide and launched a franchise including *10 Cloverfield Lane* and *The Cloverfield Paradox* (now streaming on Netflix). Another film in the series is currently being planned.
Other Horror Movies Now On Paramount+
Paramount+ is getting ready for Halloween by adding a bunch of horror movies to its streaming library, including *Cloverfield*. If you’re planning a scary movie night, you’ll find classics like the *Friday the 13th* series, *Scream 4*, and *I Know What You Did Last Summer*, along with other favorites like *Sleepy Hollow*, *Sweeney Todd*, *World War Z*, and *The Addams Family*.
