There are reports that Ubisoft is planning to remake *Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag*, and this new version will likely include more features commonly found in role-playing games. While it’s unusual for a remake to significantly change how a game plays, that seems to be Ubisoft’s approach. *Assassin’s Creed* is a major franchise for Ubisoft, and many fans are hoping for a return to the series’ best qualities. However, this change could disappoint players and ultimately not achieve the results Ubisoft wants.
Ubisoft’s Curious Decision Could Hit, but It’s More Likely to Backfire

So, why is Ubisoft revisiting *Prince of Persia* now? The launch of *Skull and Bones* was a major disappointment. Despite being hyped as a groundbreaking “AAAA” title and built on the success of *Black Flag*, it failed to impress, receiving a score of 59 on Metacritic and a 3.3 user rating. Given that the pirate game didn’t succeed, it’s likely Ubisoft is trying to broaden the appeal of *Black Flag* in this remake by moving away from a purely pirate-focused experience.
Another possibility is that Ubisoft wants to make this new version of *Black Flag* stand out. Remakes and remasters often simply update the graphics and controls of an existing game, which is great. However, it’s also reasonable to add new content for players who are already familiar with the original. It’s similar to how a movie might remaster an old film or adapt a book – creators often make changes to justify creating a new version and make it distinct.
This new direction fits well with the current feel of the *Assassin’s Creed* games. While earlier titles like *Black Flag* weren’t role-playing games, *Assassin’s Creed* changed significantly with *Origins*. That game introduced a major shift towards RPG elements, and the series has continued down that path ever since. Considering this, it’s not surprising Ubisoft is exploring this idea, even if it’s a bold move.
Generally, the most critically acclaimed and beloved *Assassin’s Creed* games were released before *Origins*. However, the games that have sold the most copies are those with stronger role-playing game features. Ubisoft likely believes this RPG focus is key to their success, and they’re now attempting to incorporate it into a game reminiscent of *Black Flag*.
People who enjoyed the original *Black Flag* will probably buy this remake. Plus, RPG fans who didn’t play the first game might be interested now, as this version seems to lean more into RPG elements. However, there’s also a chance it could fail – something Ubisoft has experienced recently.
Gamers often resist change, even when a series needs to evolve. The shift from traditional Zelda games to *Breath of the Wild* remains a point of debate, despite its success. We’ve seen a similar reaction to Ubisoft’s change in direction with *Assassin’s Creed*. It’s surprising to see established, popular games altered, and it can be jarring for fans. However, even if these changes aren’t well-received, the original games-like *Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag*-are still available and will remain so for the foreseeable future.
