‘Quit Game and Restart’: Borderlands 4 Runs Worse the Longer You Play on All Consoles

Okay, so I’ve been following the Borderlands 4 news closely, and Digital Foundry just dropped their full technical analysis. Basically, they’ve confirmed what a lot of us were worried about – the game seems to be having some performance problems on all the consoles. They looked at how it runs on the PS5 Pro, the regular PS5, and both Xbox Series X and S, and it’s not looking great across the board. It’s good they’ve confirmed it, but definitely a little disappointing to hear!

As a big Borderlands fan, I was a little worried to hear about performance issues, and it seems Digital Foundry’s testing confirmed them. Basically, the longer you play Borderlands 4 – they’re seeing problems after about an hour – the more the frame rate drops. This is happening on all platforms right now, and it’s definitely noticeable in Performance Mode. They aren’t sure yet, but it sounds like Quality Mode might start to suffer the same way if you play for a really long time too.

Problems that have been ongoing with Oblivion Remastered seem to be repeating in the new release, Borderlands 4. PlayStation 5 players are specifically reporting that the game runs more poorly the longer they play it.

Besides potential memory issues, the new game seems to be causing inconsistent frame rates, especially on the PS5 Pro.

I’ve been hearing from other players that if Borderlands 4 starts to run a little choppy after playing for a while, simply restarting the game on our PS5 seems to fix it. A lot of us are thinking this is probably a memory leak issue with the game, and restarting clears things up temporarily.

Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox Software, confirmed the temporary fix: simply quitting and restarting the game. The development team knows about the problem and is currently creating a patch for PlayStation 5 to resolve it.

The PC version of Borderlands 4 has been struggling with performance problems. Randy Pitchford even suggested that unhappy players request a refund through Steam instead of waiting for fixes. Getting a refund on PlayStation 5 is a bit harder, so PS5 players might need to wait for updates instead of requesting their money back.

I’m still putting the finishing touches on my Borderlands 4 review for the PS5 – they just gave us the code yesterday! Everyone seems to like the PC version, with most reviews giving it around an 84 out of 100. But, the player scores are way lower, only a 46, because of all the issues people are having with the PC version. Hopefully, the PS5 version is smoother!
