Helldivers 2 wins big on August’s revenue charts thanks to a “substantial uplift” from its Xbox launch — oh, and Battlefield 6 dominated engagement, too

2025 has been a great year for gamers, but surprisingly, one of the biggest hits of the year is actually a game from 2024: Helldivers 2. It’s continued to be a hugely popular online multiplayer experience.

Arrowhead Game Studios’ popular co-op shooter has kept players hooked since it launched in February 2024. In fact, it recently jumped to fourth place on the gaming revenue chart for August, according to Newzoo (via GamesIndustry.biz). This is a significant leap from its 37th place ranking the previous month.

The game jumped an impressive 33 places in the rankings, largely thanks to the huge success of its launch on Xbox. The release was so popular it even caused temporary server issues. Previously a PlayStation and PC exclusive, Helldivers 2 was highly anticipated by Xbox Series X|S players, and they were thrilled when it finally became available on Microsoft consoles.

Helldivers 2 quickly became a hit on Xbox, selling almost 1 million copies in just six days, according to Alinea Analytics. This is even more impressive than its initial launch on PlayStation 5 last year, where around 633,000 copies were sold in the same timeframe.

Helldivers 2 has recently become very successful financially, thanks to popular additions like the $15 ODST crossover, which brought iconic weapons and armor from Halo 3: ODST into the game. The major ‘Into the Unjust’ update also helped, expanding the game’s enemy bugs with a new group and adding frightening boss creatures like the Hive Lord.

Another major success in August was the upcoming Battlefield 6, the newest installment in the popular large-scale multiplayer shooter series. The game is expected to be one of the highlights of 2025. In fact, the Battlefield 6 beta was the third most popular game in terms of monthly players, surpassing well-known titles like Roblox, Minecraft, and Grand Theft Auto V.

The game’s performance is really remarkable considering it was only playable for eight days total, split across two weekends. However, seeing how many people were playing during the test periods, it’s not a huge surprise. The Battlefield 6 Open Beta attracted over 500,000 players on Steam alone, breaking Call of Duty’s record and becoming the most popular Battlefield game ever on PC.

Newzoo believes the recent beta test suggests the upcoming Battlefield 6, launching October 10th, will be a hit. Players have responded positively, particularly enjoying the return to classic Battlefield classes, the detailed destruction, and the realistic military setting.

Newzoo believes the beta test suggests the upcoming October 10th release of Battlefield 6 will be highly successful.

The game is launching next month, and the developers have been listening to player feedback from the beta test. They’re currently testing several changes in a closed playtest program called Battlefield Labs, which also includes a battle royale mode and bigger maps designed for vehicle combat. Sign-ups for Battlefield Labs are open again if you want to try it out.

The excitement for the upcoming Battlefield 6 has surprisingly brought players back to Battlefield 2042. Even though many players initially disliked the game’s specialists and large-scale battles, they’re now returning to try out the new Iwo Jima map and unlock rewards for Battlefield 6. Recent reports show the game has actually reached its highest player numbers since launch, surpassing even its first month in 2021.

It’s great to see both Helldivers 2 and the new Battlefield succeeding. Helldivers 2 offers a truly impressive and fun cooperative gaming experience, while the new Battlefield is a welcome return to form for a series that hasn’t quite hit its stride since 2018.

Helldivers 2 is a truly unique experience, and it’s fantastic that it’s now available on Xbox, letting everyone enjoy its explosive, chaotic action and focus on teamwork. Meanwhile, the upcoming Battlefield 6 is taking a different approach to modern shooters by avoiding fast-paced movement and overly flashy designs, which is a refreshing change of pace.

Helldivers 2 and Battlefield 6 are both available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, costing $39.99 for Helldivers 2 and $69.99 for Battlefield 6. You can currently find Helldivers 2 on PC for $34.39 and on Xbox for $37.79 at Loaded (previously CDKeys) due to special offers.
