Being a DC fan is fantastic right now! The comics are consistently excellent, and many characters are experiencing a creative revival. We’re seeing a really engaging build-up to DC’s next major event, which feels more exciting than recent ones. Plus, the individual comic series for each character are incredibly strong and tell compelling standalone stories. And don’t forget the Absolute Universe line, which is brilliantly reimagining classic DC heroes in fresh, inventive ways while staying true to what makes them beloved.
With so many fantastic Justice League stories, compelling Batman series, and essential Absolute editions, it’s easy to overlook some great comics. Reading everything can be costly, and when the quality is consistently high, you don’t want to fall behind on titles you already enjoy. Today, we’re highlighting five series you might be missing out on, but really should check out.
5) Supergirl
If you love classic superhero comics, you’ll really enjoy this one. Kara, a.k.a. Supergirl, returns to her hometown of Midvale and finds someone pretending to be her – a new fan with Kryptonian powers! As she tries to show everyone what it truly means to be Supergirl, she discovers that her quiet town holds more surprises than she expected.
This series is pure fun, filled with silly adventures and heartwarming moments that emphasize kindness and personal growth. It’s a cheerful comic where Kara makes friends and learns that everyone faces challenges, but we can still connect with each other. If you’re looking for a lighthearted and comforting read reminiscent of classic Silver Age comics, I highly recommend it. Plus, it introduces Princess Shark, who is absolutely fantastic!
4) Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Justice League
If you want a comic that’s fun, charming, and truly original, this is it. It delivers exactly what you’d expect from the title, but with exceptional execution. While Cheetah and Cheshire might seem like an unlikely duo, their chemistry is fantastic, and the story is a satisfying treat for anyone who enjoys a good heist movie.
This comic brilliantly demonstrates why robbing the Justice League is a bad plan, yet the story boldly moves forward. It features a fantastic team of characters who are long overdue for attention, and even includes DC’s most overlooked hero, Sideways. It’s a thrilling heist story where supervillains target superheroes, all while delivering compelling character interactions. If that sounds appealing, you’ll definitely enjoy this comic.
3) Adventures of Superman: The Book of El
There are a lot of great Superman comics coming out these days, so this first issue might slip under the radar, but it’s definitely worth checking out. Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson is back, continuing the story he began in his popular *Action Comics* run. This issue deals with the fallout from the “Warworld Saga” and connects to themes he introduced in the Future State Superman stories.
If you love seeing Superman cherish his family, this story is a must-read. It explores Superman’s lasting influence on the world and what it means to carry on his legacy, all through the eyes of a descendant from the distant future. Fans of previous work by Johnson will feel right at home, as this story seamlessly continues that narrative. But even if you’re new to this corner of the Superman universe, you can jump right in and enjoy a classic Superman time travel adventure.
2) New Gods
Most fans are aware that Darkseid seemingly died and merged with the larger Absolute Universe. The comic series *New Gods* explores the consequences of this event, focusing on how the New Gods are affected by his absence and a new, devastating threat that aims to destroy them all. While it sets up important background for future storylines, the real strength of the comic lies in its emotional depth and character development.
This story really gets inside the heads of its gods, showing them grappling with unprecedented challenges and their own limits. It’s a powerful exploration of how family and love can help us overcome even the most difficult times. It’s a captivating mystery with rich world-building, all centered around the strength of familial bonds against overwhelming darkness, and I highly recommend it – you don’t need to be familiar with the world to enjoy it.
1) Batgirl
I might be partial, but *Batgirl* is genuinely one of the most enjoyable comics being published right now. It centers on Cassandra Cain as she faces off against the Unburied, a secretive and incredibly skilled group of ninjas targeting her family – a consequence of her complex relationship with her mother, Lady Shiva. The series beautifully explores the complicated bond between these two deadly women and delivers some of the most exciting fight scenes in comics today. It expertly balances heartfelt emotional moments as Cass navigates her feelings toward her mother with action that will thrill fans of kung fu movies. *Batgirl* uniquely blends emotional depth with thrilling action, and you’ll find touching conversations alongside over-the-top attack declarations – it’s a fantastic read.
Here are five DC comic series that are just as good as anything currently being published. What are your thoughts? Share your opinions and discuss them with other fans in the ComicBook Forum!
