I’m really excited about something I just discovered while digging into the latest Windows 11 preview builds! Microsoft is letting you set videos as your desktop wallpaper. I saw @phantomofearth tweet about it first, and it’s awesome – you can use MP4, MOV, AVI, WMV, M4V, or even MKV files. Basically, instead of a static image, your desktop will *play* a video. It’s a small thing, but it adds a lot of personality to your computer!
People have been asking for the option to use a video as their desktop wallpaper for a long time. This feature is already available on many Linux systems, and macOS lets you set a video as your lock screen. While Windows Vista briefly offered this through a feature called DreamScene, it was limited to the most expensive version of the operating system.
Windows used to have a feature called DreamScene that allowed videos as desktop backgrounds, but it wasn’t included in later versions. Since then, Windows hasn’t natively supported video backgrounds. However, programs like Lively Wallpaper and Wallpaper Engine now offer this functionality, and even let you use 3D scenes and interactive environments as your wallpaper.
Currently, setting a video as your wallpaper often requires downloading extra software, but that’s about to change. Windows 11 will soon natively support video wallpapers, making the process as simple as changing your regular image background – it’ll be fast and straightforward.
We don’t yet know how this new feature will affect battery life or how well Windows 11 will run, but it’s great that Microsoft is offering it as a choice for users. The feature was first noticed by Phantomofearth on X and seems to be included in the latest preview versions of Windows 11, which were released earlier this week to those in the Dev and Beta Channels. Since Microsoft hasn’t officially announced it yet, it will probably be several weeks before it’s available to everyone.
