Crunchyroll’s Most Controversial Anime Is Getting Another Season Despite Backlash

Despite significant fan criticism, a popular anime on Crunchyroll has been renewed for another season, set to air next year. Crunchyroll has had a busy summer with many new anime finishing their initial runs, and viewers are now learning which series will be continuing. While some renewals have been happily received, other shows are facing backlash, with fans expressing that they don’t want them to continue despite potential remaining storylines.

Since it first came out a few years ago, *Rent-a-Girlfriend* has sparked a lot of debate and disagreement, and the recent fourth season this summer only intensified that. Now that the season has finished airing in Japan, it’s been confirmed that *Rent-a-Girlfriend* will be back for a fifth season next year. To mark the announcement, a special visual was released, created by the show’s character designer, Kanna Hirayama. You can see it below.

Rent-a-Girlfriend Anime Returns for Season 5 in 2026

The second part of *Rent-a-Girlfriend* Season 4 will now be released as a brand new Season 5 next year. Originally, Season 4 was planned to be split into two parts with a break between them. The team behind Season 4 is likely to return for Season 5, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed. The anime will continue adapting the story from the ‘Hawaiians’ arc.

Season 4 of *Rent-a-Girlfriend* brought back the original voice actors: Shun Horie as Kazuya Kinoshita, Sora Amamiya as Chizuru Mizuhara, Aoi Yuki as Mami Nanami, Nao Toyama as Ruka Sarashina, Rie Takahashi as Sumi Sakurasawa, and Yu Serizawa as Mini Yaemori. These characters all played a part in the Hawaiian Arc, which was featured in the fourth season. Fans are particularly excited to see some well-known scenes from the original manga finally animated as the series continues.

Why Is Rent-a-Girlfriend So Controversial?

The manga series *Rent-a-Girlfriend* continues to draw criticism as it goes on, with many fans frustrated that the main characters still haven’t become a couple after so many chapters. Compared to other popular romance stories that are moving forward more quickly, readers are increasingly critical, particularly after some key romantic moments didn’t pan out as expected.

Despite many fans feeling the anime has become repetitive and hasn’t evolved since the beginning, new seasons are still being made. The characters haven’t grown much, and the story feels stuck in a loop, even after several seasons. More episodes are planned for next year, but you can currently watch all available seasons of *Rent-a-Girlfriend* on Crunchyroll.
