In the world of *Harry Potter*, wizards generally avoid saying Voldemort’s name. But the upcoming HBO series faces a different problem: they can’t even *cast* an actor to play him yet! While the show is already in production, no one has been chosen for the role of the Dark Lord, and there’s speculation that this version of the villain will be very different from Ralph Fiennes’ portrayal.
As a big fan, I’m hearing some huge changes are coming to the Wizarding World with the new *Harry Potter* TV show – it’s going to be really different from the movies, which you can currently watch on HBO Max or Peacock. Entertainment blogger Daniel Richtman is reporting that Lord Voldemort might look *very* different when the show comes out around 2027… and he’s hinting it could even be Lady Voldemort! Apparently, Richtman says:
Auditions are being held for the role of Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter series, and they’re considering actors of all genders, which means we might see a woman play the character.
Ralph Fiennes’ performance as Voldemort is so well-known that choosing a woman for the role could help avoid direct comparisons. While the news that women are being considered doesn’t guarantee a female cast member, it’s definitely a thought-provoking approach.
It’s common for fans to react strongly when beloved characters are recast. For example, Paapa Essiedu has faced criticism since taking on the role of Severus Snape, a character famously played by the late Alan Rickman.
A few months ago, there was talk that the actor playing Voldemort had been chosen, but those in charge were determined to keep it a secret until the movie came out. Before the reveal, fans came up with lots of different guesses about who might take on the role.
Many people thought Cillian Murphy would be perfect for the role, but the *Oppenheimer* actor said those reports aren’t true. Tom Hiddleston was also considered, but it probably wasn’t just because his name sounds similar to Tom Riddle. Based on the other actors already cast, whoever gets the part will likely be a popular choice with fans.

Dominic McLaughlin is a charming choice for the new Harry Potter. And Arabella Stanton perfectly embodies Hermione Granger, delivering one of her famous lines with ease.
The new HBO series expanding the Wizarding World has added some exciting cast members: John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, and Alastair Stout is joining as Ron Weasley. I’m really looking forward to any news about the series and everything else coming to the Harry Potter universe. Now, everyone’s wondering: who will be cast as Voldemort, and how long will we have to wait to find out?
