Now that *Superman* has become the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year, writer and director James Gunn has been sharing details about the upcoming sequel. We know Michael Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor. Titled *Man of Tomorrow*, the film will delve deeper into the character of Lex Luthor, with Gunn explaining on Threads that Nic Hoult’s portrayal will explore the character’s complexities in greater detail.
I’m really fascinated by Lex and want to understand his motivations and how he connects to the bigger picture. We’ve seen how villainous he can be, but I’m interested in exploring him as a person. Despite all the bad things he does, there’s something surprisingly admirable and even heroic about his character.
I was really struck by what he said next. He asked us to put aside ideas of right and wrong, which is tough, but then described this incredibly forceful character. This person boasts about unbelievable power – holding up buildings, shooting down planes with just a look – and delivers a defiant, aggressive challenge. Honestly, I can’t help but admire his sheer determination and enormous ego. His ambition feels limitless, and there’s something compelling about rooting for the underdog, even when they’re so… intense.
He acknowledges this person has significant influence in the business world, but emphasizes that, at the end of the day, he’s still just a regular human being – he can’t do superhuman things. And that’s something he really appreciates.
What really got me excited was when Lex Luthor mentioned the sequel would be “more comic booky” – it sounds like they’re really leaning into the source material, and I can’t wait to see what that looks like!
Warner Bros has already dated the comic book tentpole for release on 9th July 2027
