If you follow BookTok, you’ve probably seen the buzz around *Alchemised*, a new romance novel that started as a popular *Harry Potter* fanfiction. It’s based on SenLinYu’s story *Manacled*, which reimagines the *Harry Potter* universe after the events of *Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix*, centering on a character inspired by Hermione Granger, now named Helena Marino. *Alchemised* has been adapted from the original fanfiction, removing any elements that might have violated copyright. The fact that the fanfiction gained ten million views online and already has a multi-million dollar movie deal suggests that the *Harry Potter* series missed an opportunity.
Unlike SenLinYu’s “Manacled,” which expanded its world, Warner Bros. is taking a safer route with its new *Harry Potter* television series. Instead of offering something new, they’re essentially retelling the same story we’ve already seen in the popular films. This approach seems to be a response to the disappointing performance of the *Fantastic Beasts* movies, which were written by J.K. Rowling. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues have also created a divide among fans, with some hesitant to support future *Harry Potter* projects, especially those she’s involved in. While *Succession* writer Francesca Gardiner is leading the writing for the series, Rowling remains heavily involved creatively, which is frustrating many fans.
Harry Potter‘s Future Needs to Be More Than Reboots & Remakes

The Wizarding World needs new, imaginative writers to carry on the story after Harry Potter at Warner Bros. While acknowledging the work of established creators is important, the *Fantastic Beasts* films showed that success in one area doesn’t guarantee success in another. Many believe the biggest issue with the later *Fantastic Beasts* movies is that they shifted away from the original focus on Newt Scamander and the magical creatures, instead becoming a complicated backstory about Albus Dumbledore. Plus, the source material, *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, was originally a short guidebook written as part of the Harry Potter novels, and didn’t have enough story to support a three-movie series.
If Warner Bros. continues to rely heavily on the original creator, we’re likely to see more uninspired remakes and reboots, potentially losing viewers in the process. It’s unfortunate, because despite the controversy surrounding her views, the author created a remarkably rich and complex world in the Harry Potter books. There’s still so much potential for new stories – like a historical series about the founding of Hogwarts, similar to *Game of Thrones*. A prequel focusing on Harry’s parents’ time at school would also be popular with fans, as the books hinted at their experiences and would feature younger versions of familiar characters – something the *Fantastic Beasts* films didn’t quite deliver.
It looks like fans wanting truly creative interpretations of Harry Potter will have to turn to the book *Alchemised*, as Warner Bros. and J.K. Rowling don’t seem willing to embrace the passion that made the series so successful.
