Despite some recent controversies, Strictly Come Dancing remains incredibly popular. Last year, the show faced negative reports, leading some to believe it might be cancelled. However, it rebounded with a particularly touching season, culminating in a win for comedian Chris McCausland and his professional partner, Dianne Buswell.
Strictly Come Dancing is returning for its 23rd season, despite recent media attention. There are a couple of updates – voting will now be done exclusively online, and the set has been slightly updated – but the core of the show stays the same: celebrities learning to dance and hoping to impress the judges.
Dianne Buswell with Stefan Dennis, 66, Neighbours actor

Dianne explained that Stefan’s acting skills will be a great asset, because she believes in showcasing a character’s personality through dance. When they first met, he wasn’t familiar with her work. He even told her that the previous year’s winner had moved him to tears, prompting Dianne to gently point out that he had been dancing with her during that performance.
Last year was amazing, but Chris and I were surprised by how long people kept supporting us. I don’t go into this season thinking about winning last time – it feels like a fresh start. One year you might win, and the next you could be eliminated fairly early on.
So, Stefan, you didnāt recognise Dianne?
I had never met her before! But she’s a fantastic teacher. It’ll be challenging, but also enjoyable. Honestly, I could be doing much worse things – like digging ditches.
Whoās your biggest competition?
āYeah, itās a bugger, isnāt it?ā
Is that why you had the time to do Strictly?
I was planning to slow down and semi-retire, but then I got the call about *Strictly Come Dancing*, and now I’m training incredibly hard. I thought working on *Neighbours* (Ramsay Street) involved long days, but this is on a whole other level!
Katya Jones with Lewis Cope, 30, Emmerdale actor

Everyone knows Iām a bit of a clumsy dancer, but this year feels different. Lewis is a good mover, and Iām excited to see if I can teach him ballroom. However, his background in musical theatre might actually make it *harder* – itās tougher to break old habits than to teach someone from scratch.
You came onto the show a bit later, taking over for Kristian Nairn, who was in Game of Thrones. Have you had time to get familiar with everything?
Lewis explained that he received the initial call on a Monday and quickly agreed to the project by Wednesday. He announced it on The One Show the very next day. He admits things moved so fast he hasnāt had time to fully process whatās happening, and is simply taking each day as it comes.
You famously played a role in the West End production of Billy Elliot the Musical when you were younger. Has that experience helped you with Strictly Come Dancing? It was quite a while ago – 19 years, actually – and I only did a bit of tap dancing in the show. I havenāt tap danced in 17 years, so Iām a bit rusty! But if I make it to musicals week on Strictly, Iād be thrilled to perform something from Billy Elliot.ā
How have you found being āStrictly-fiedā with the fake tan, sequins and so on?
I haven’t applied my self-tanner yet – I might have to switch out my white sheets just in case! But I’ve noticed that when you wear certain clothes, it really changes how you feel and act. It just makes you feel more confident and cheerful overall.
Carlos Gu with Karen Carney, 38, ex-professional footballer

You know, working with Karen has been amazing. She’s clearly an athlete – the stamina and physical strength are just obvious. But what *really* impresses me is how fast she picks things up. I honestly think she’s got a really bright future in dance; she’s a natural!
Karen, whatās it like in the Strictly spotlight?
Karen said the initial launch event was amazing, comparing it to the energy of a major sporting event. Now that it’s down to just her and Carlos, things are starting to feel more serious, and she has complete trust in him.
Are you bringing your sporting competitive spirit to the dancefloor?
I don’t focus on winning or losing. When you’re really competitive, you’re always looking ahead instead of enjoying what’s happening right now. I just want to relax and have fun.
Is it hard to get out of that mindset?
Looking back, I believe a stronger drive to win could have earned me a gold medal instead of silver and bronze. That’s where I fell short. However, I think people often misunderstand competitiveness. You can also be competitive with yourself, striving to become the best *you* can be.
Johannes Radebe with Alex Kingston, 62, former Doctor Who & ER star

Johannes and his dance partner, Alex, immediately connected when they realized they had both chosen to wear ruffle shirts. He believes her background in acting is a real asset to their dancing, as dance is essentially a way of telling a story. He’s also thrilled with her natural sense of rhythm, noting that she brings a lot of energy and happiness to her performances.
Alex, did anyone inspire you to sign up?
Alex explained that seeing Sarah Hadland perform last year inspired him to try out. Theyād both wanted to do the show since 2019, but their agents hadn’t allowed it at the time. Watching Sarah finally do it made him decide to pursue the opportunity, so they could both achieve a long-held shared ambition.
Whatās your biggest Strictly fear?
It’s really intimidating to be so open and exposed to millions of viewers, and also nerve-wracking to perform in front of the judges. I usually agree with what they say when I watch the show, so I can’t go in thinking they’re wrong.
Aljaž Škorjanec with La Voix, 45, drag queen

Aljaž was really impressed when he met La Voix. They had a speed-dating session to see who would be paired up for dancing, and it was incredibly hot in the studio – around 40 degrees! Aljaž was sweating and feeling a bit insecure, but La Voix didnāt even seem to break a sweat. He was amazed by how easily she handled it, realizing it was down to years of experience performing in drag in hot nightclubs. They connected immediately.
La Voix, how does it feel stepping into the Strictly spotlight?
I can’t believe this is happening – it’s always been a dream of mine! It all came about because a waxing appointment opened up, and I thought, ‘Why not?’ Honestly, just having someone else do my hair and makeup is incredible. I’m used to doing everything myself, so this is a real treat.
Youāre looking fabulous today. Is the plan to perform in full drag every week?
Look, as far as my approach to the show goes, Iām all in on the glamour. Thatās what *Strictly* is, and honestly, itās a huge part of why I said yes. I’m not going to be the contestant who shows up looking casual – you wonāt be seeing me in jeans and a t-shirt, thatās for sure! I want to embrace the full sparkle and spectacle of it all.
Drag queens are famous for their witty responses. Can you think of any short, funny insults aimed at Craig Revel Horwood?
I’m here to learn and be reasonable, but if Craig pushes me too far, I will definitely defend myself. It’s just how I’m wired – I tend to speak my mind, and sometimes that gets me into trouble.
Karen Hauer with Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, 37,sprinter and Gladiator

Karen believes Harry, as an Olympian, has a strong mental game, but she wants to push his focus even further with unusual exercises. She plans to give him oddly specific instructions, like trying to move his toe independently of his armpit or adjusting his shoulder to prevent his finger from touching her neck. She emphasizes that these exercises will be done playfully and with a sense of fun.
Harry, you did the Strictly Christmas special last year. How different is the main series?
Harry says that while ‘Christmas Strictly’ is a joyful and festive experience, he understands that the high scores given during the Christmas special aren’t comparable to regular competition scores.
How does Strictly compare to life as Nitro on Gladiators ā or as a sprinter?
āIām on holiday. This is fun! Iām not getting hit with the pugil stick or racing Usain Bolt.ā
Will you take any dance skills back with you to Gladiators?
Okay, so I just finished watching the latest season of ‘Come Gladiators,’ and let me tell you, the contestants are really pushing themselves. I was actually noticing how much effort they’re putting in – I could practically *see* a competitor’s pinky finger straining on that pugil stick, and another’s foot subtly turning outwards as they attempted The Wall. It’s a testament to the show’s intensity that you start focusing on these tiny details, realizing just how physically demanding it all is.
Jowita PrzystaÅ with Ross King, 63, showbiz reporter

You know, watching Jowita and Ross dance together feelsā¦familiar. It’s like they’ve known each other forever, instantly comfortable and connected. Theyāre even getting notes from the judges about chatting too much! But beyond the steps, itās Rossās personality that really shines. Jowita says, and I wholeheartedly agree, that dance is about truth, joy, and raw emotion. She believes Ross brings that 75% of what you *need* as a partner – the rest, the technique, can always be taught. It’s a lovely sentiment, and you can really see that connection on the dance floor.
Ross, youāre used to getting the showbiz stories. Whatās it like to be in one?
Ross āItās very weird. Thereās a bit of trepidation. Iām trying to surrender to it.ā
Is there any experience from your career that might help?
Whoās rooting for you to win?
There’s a lot riding on me representing Scotland, knowing the whole country is cheering me on. Plus, I’ve got the support of Team Lorraine – Lorraine Kelly has been calling me ‘twinkletoes’ right from the start!ā
Nadiya Bychkova with Chris Robshaw, 39, ex-rugby player

Nadiya enjoys working with athletes because they’re dedicated and understand the importance of hard work, which is crucial for Strictly given the limited rehearsal time. She believes her current partner, Chris, might be her most promising athlete contestant yet.
Chris, how competitive will you be in Strictly?
I’ve always been competitive, it’s just part of who I am after everything I’ve experienced. But I’ve been told you shouldn’t be *too* competitive on Strictly Come Dancing. My friend Ugo Monye was on the show a few years back, so I’m hoping to do better than him – it’s all in good fun, though!
What made you decide to do Strictly now?
I’ve talked about this before, but I wasn’t really ready to commit until now. I wanted to push myself, and my son is a big fan of dancing, so he’s really looking forward to it.
What did your rugby mates make of it?
I’ve been getting incredible support, and the demand for Strictly tickets is already higher than for England tickets! It’s been absolutely wild.
Kai Widdrington with Vicky Pattison, 37, reality TV star

Kai shared that Vicky was his first choice as a partner, revealing they both have roots in Newcastle. He admitted to feeling nervous, but hopes achieving success will build their confidence and momentum.
Vicky, you got married last year. What was your first dance at the reception?
Vicky said, āCome on, it wasnāt a big deal. I never even had a first dance. We probably just awkwardly swayed around a bit, like everyone does at prom.ā
So why do Strictly now?
Iād been hoping for this opportunity for a long time, but no one had ever offered it to me. When it finally came, I was completely surprised. I even asked my agent if I could have some time to consider it, but she let me know Iād already accepted.
How does Strictly compare to Iām a Celebrity…?
Being in the jungle felt surreal – it was like a strange, isolated world where I was even eating unusual food with Ant and Dec. Now, I’m facing a new challenge where we’re being judged on our performance, and honestly, even the thought of Sandra from Surrey watching makes me nervous!
Vito Coppola with Ellie Goldstein, 23, model and actor

Vito describes Ellie as a little sister to him, and himself as her big brother. He thinks she’s incredibly talented and engaging, and he’s committed to helping her showcase that on the show. He wants her to be authentic, believing audiences will connect with and admire her natural sparkle.
Ellie, youāre an actor and a model. How different is that to being on Strictly?
Ellie explained that while modeling is just about posing, this feels more like acting – a complete and immersive experience, much like ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. She loves the energy of the show, with its dramatic lighting and glamorous atmosphere.
You’ve achieved so much in raising awareness, like being the first model with Downās syndrome featured on the cover of Vogue. What impact do you hope your appearance on Strictly Come Dancing will have on others?
Just keep chasing your dreams and believing in yourself. Being on Strictly has been an amazing experience – I especially loved the launch show! The professional dancers were fantastic, and all the celebrities were wonderful.
Which of your fellow celebrities were you most excited to meet?
Dani Dyer and La Voix are definitely highlights! As for the professional dancers, Karen, Vito, and Nikita are all fantastic, but Vito really stands out as the best.
Which dances are you looking forward to?
āThe cha-cha-cha, the Charleston, the foxtrot, and the waltz. Just a few!ā
Amy Dowden with Thomas Skinner, 34, ex-Apprentice contestant

Amy shared that Tom’s dedication is his greatest quality. She mentioned he gets up at three AM to sell his goods at the market. What she admires most is his willingness to fully commit to anything he tries, unlike some celebrities who seem self-conscious when learning to dance. Tom just dives right in.
So, Tom, why do Strictly now?
Thomas admits people might be surprised to see him on Strictly, but heās excited to challenge himself and learn to dance. He especially loves that the show brings happiness to families.
Will your family come down to watch you?
People have been really excited for me to start dancing, constantly telling me they can’t wait to see it. I got a taste of that when I was at a West Ham game last week – around 500 people wanted photos or to wish me well. Many even said theyād never watched ‘Strictly’ before, but theyāre tuning in because of me. I’m doing this for all the regular guys – the dads who enjoy a beer and arenāt professional dancers!
Alexis Warr with George Clarke, 25,social media influencer

Alexis says George learns dance steps quickly, but then sometimes gets too caught up in thinking about them and loses his footing. However, he clearly has a natural sense of rhythm. Alexis has also seen George’s videos online and thinks he’s hilarious, noting that he’s a really good dancer when he’s just having fun. She believes he has a lot of potential.
George, whatās it like to join Strictly?
Honestly, this project was a bit of a leap for me – definitely outside what I usually do. But when the offer came, I just thought, ‘Wow, they’re actually asking *me*?!’ It struck me that in a few years, people might have forgotten who I am, so I figured I should take the opportunity while I could. It felt like a ‘now or never’ kind of thing.
What do your friends and family make of it?
I can’t refuse – my grandmother would be furious! It’s great to finally do something my family can all enjoy and relate to when they watch it.
Maybe youāll get new followers from Strictly?
People have occasionally wished me luck on ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ and it’s pretty clear they aren’t the type of people who normally follow my work!
Julian Caillon with Balvinder Sopal, 46,EastEnders actor

Julian said having Balvinder on the team has been wonderful. After meeting some celebrities, they were asked who the best dancers were, and Balvinder consistently ranked as one of the top two. Julian believes she has a natural and surprising talent for dance.
Balvinder, youāve revealed you did some amateur ballroom before. What started that?
Balvinder says watching the early seasons of *Strictly Come Dancing* inspired her to start dancing. She took a social dance class in Huddersfield, which she described as an incredibly joyful experience, but unfortunately, she had to stop because it was too expensive.
So, why do Strictly now?
I’m making 2025 a year of saying ‘yes’ to new things. After losing my mom last year, I feel like sheād want me to embrace opportunities, especially since she loved this show and we always watched it together. She was a very strong person who always faced life with positivity, and I want to honor her memory by doing the same.
Nikita Kuzmin with Dani Dyer, 29,ex-Love Island star

Nikita shared that when she found out she’d be partnered with her current dance partner, she asked others what she was like off-camera. Everyone described her as incredibly kind and beautiful, and Nikita confirmed that’s true! While her partner is still learning to dance, sheās a natural mover and has a lot of potential.
Dani was upset because her dad immediately told everyone she was joining Strictly Come Dancing. Sheād specifically worried about telling him because heās known for sharing secrets. Heād initially denied telling anyone, but the next day, people started asking her about the show, saying her dad had let it slip. Despite this, he’s really enthusiastic about her participation and plans to be in the audience for the first live performance.
What are you looking forward to the most?
āProbably musicals week. I love a musical.ā
Have any ex-contestants given you advice?
I recently talked to Dan Walker, whom I climbed Kilimanjaro with. He said heād love to repeat the experience, calling it the best time heās ever had.
Lauren Oakley withJimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, 53,ex-footballer

Lauren observed that Jimmy quickly responds to any direction she gives him – whether it’s about his arm position or pointing his toe – because heās accustomed to following a coachās instructions. She feels this is a real advantage for her, and she also appreciates that he has a natural sense of rhythm, giving her a good foundation to build on.
Jimmy, youāre a football legend, but have you done much dancing?
Jimmy was hanging out with his daughters in the kitchen, playfully embracing his role as a ‘girly dad.’ They love getting him involved in their activities, and he shared a funny story about his middle daughter trying to get him to do a gymnastics move – a box jump, or a split in the air. He said as soon as his daughters found out he was going to be on a show, they insisted he participate, telling him, ‘You’re going to have to take it, Daddy!’
You’re accustomed to performing well with large audiences, but is ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ a completely different challenge?
I just love football – it feels totally natural to me. Dancing, though? That’s way outside what I’m used to, but honestly, that’s great! Once you stop playing football professionally, you lose that competitive edge, and it’s really fun to get a little taste of it again through something different.
The cast includes athletes like soccer players, a rugby star, and a former sprinter who competed on Gladiator. Are you ready for some serious competition?
We’re all aiming to be highly competitive and achieve the best results we can. Right now, my focus is simply on improving my own skills.
