Nev Schulman and Max Joseph are officially logging off from Catfish.
The pair, who started hosting the show in 2012 after their popular documentary became a hit, responded to the news that MTV was cancelling the series after nine seasons.
In a video posted to Instagram on September 22nd, Nev announced that *Catfish* has been cancelled after 12 years and 300 episodes, adding that the show involved a lot of travel across the country. He ended the announcement with an apology.
Nev and Max, the hosts of the show that helped people investigate potentially fake online relationships-and who famously coined the term “Catfish”-shared memories with fans about their experiences filming the series. They reminisced about all the hotels they stayed in, their travels around the US, and the countless times they used reverse image searches to uncover the truth.
Max, who departed the show in 2018, suggested it might not be canceled permanently, saying, “Perhaps it’s just temporarily stopped.”
He continued, congratulating Nev on lasting over a decade in cable television. He pointed out that this was a significant achievement, especially considering it was the end of an era for cable TV, and Nev had successfully navigated it.
He added, “With a little help from me and some other people.”
Max and Nev also had a special message for the fans who tuned in throughout the years.
Max expressed his gratitude, saying the fans were the reason the show was so rewarding. He was touched that people continued to tell him how much they enjoyed watching it, even after he left, and that it had become a tradition families shared together – watching with parents or children. Hearing that meant a lot to him and showed him how much the show mattered to viewers.
Nev, who co-hosted the show with Kamie Crawford from 2018 to 2024 after Max left, also had a message for the people featured on the show-those who had been catfished and shared their stories.
Nev expressed his gratitude for everyone sharing their stories over the years, explaining that the show revolved around those experiences and a desire to help people. He thanked the audience for being a part of turning a simple idea into a worldwide discussion about kindness and understanding, and for promoting better treatment of both others and ourselves.
He expressed his gratitude to everyone involved, saying, “We really appreciate all of your help. And Max, I especially want to thank you for your support right from the start.”
Nev officially signed off with a callback to one of Catfish’s most iconic moments.
He emphasized one crucial point: no matter what challenges you face, or how someone behaves towards you, and even when you’re feeling incredibly angry, avoid insulting someone by calling them names, specifically referencing the example of not calling anyone ‘fat ass Kelly Price’.
The show *Catfish* has been cancelled just three weeks after Nev announced he’s starting a new career in New York City real estate.
On September 4th, Nev shared a video on Instagram of himself biking through New York City, announcing he’s starting a new career helping people buy or sell homes. He posted that he’s officially entered his “real estate era.”
