Jimmy Kimmel is getting the last word.
Just days after Jimmy Kimmel Live! temporarily stopped airing due to criticism over a segment about Charlie Kirk, Kimmel returned to the show and spoke emotionally about the situation. He explained that he never meant to suggest he supported violence, and was upset by the negative reaction to his comments.
He said, with tears welling up, that he never meant to downplay the seriousness of the young man’s murder, and that he absolutely didn’t find it amusing.
Kimmel also clarified that he didn’t mean to accuse any particular group of being responsible for the actions of someone who was clearly very troubled.
I didn’t mean to come across that way at all,” he explained. “I realize it might have seemed insensitive or confusing, and if it felt like I was blaming someone, I understand why you’d be frustrated. I probably would have felt the same way if I were in your position.
However, the late-night host said he “did not agree” with ABC’s decision to pull him off the air.
I explained my position, and after a lot of discussion, they decided to reconsider,” Jimmy said. “People don’t have long attention spans, and I’m just a small piece of Disney. I’m grateful they let me back on the air.
Kimmel also expressed his thanks for the widespread support he received while he was suspended for six days.
Over the past six days, I’ve been contacted by everyone I know – people have been reaching out to me constantly. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported our show and took the time to let their voices be heard, which ultimately helped amplify mine. I’m truly grateful and will never forget their support.
Kimmel also expressed gratitude for those who disagree with his show and views, but still defend his right to express them.
ABC and Disney announced on September 22nd that Jimmy Kimmel’s show, which stopped airing on September 17th, would be back on September 23rd. They also mentioned they had meaningful discussions with Kimmel while he was off the air.
The network announced on September 22nd that it had paused production of the show to prevent making a difficult national moment even more upsetting. According to a statement obtained by NBC News, the decision was made because some recent comments were considered inappropriate and poorly timed.
The 57-year-old host, who has led his late-night show for more than 20 years, received strong support from many in the entertainment world while suspended. This included messages from celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Rodrigo, and Selena Gomez, as well as over 300 signatures on a petition asking for his show to be brought back.
A recent statement compared attempts to silence Jimmy Kimmel and pressure media outlets with lawsuits and threats to the practices of the 1950s, as reported by *The Hollywood Reporter*. The statement emphasized that Senator McCarthy was eventually discredited and stopped when people united against him, and urged a similar response today, asserting that collective voices are powerful and will ensure they are heard.
After Jimmy Kimmel made comments about the suspected killer of Kirk, Tyler Robinson, on September 15th, FCC Chair Brendan Carr publicly criticized Kimmel and cautioned ABC, suggesting potential consequences for its stations. This was widely seen as a threat to revoke the network’s affiliations and quickly led to a pause in the production of *Jimmy Kimmel Live!*. Carr later stated that his comments were not intended as a threat.
Okay, so when Jimmy Kimmel got suspended, it was *amazing* to see Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, and Jimmy Fallon all come to his defense on their shows! I mean, they *had* to, right? It was so cool seeing them all stand up for him – truly a moment for the late-night community, and honestly, I was glued to the TV to catch every single supportive word. I was so happy to see them all rally around him!
During his show on September 18th, the host admitted he was confused about the situation, saying that no one seemed to have answers. He then expressed his hope for a quick recovery for Jimmy Kimmel, describing him as a good, funny, and caring person.
