Critics Are Calling Marvel Zombies ‘Terrifically Terrifying,’ But They Have Some Gripes About Our Undead Superheroes

With spooky season approaching, theaters will be filled with monsters and creatures, and Disney+ is joining the fun with *Marvel Zombies*. Based on the popular comic series, this new horror show will premiere on September 24, 2025. Early reviews, following screenings of all four episodes, suggest that critics are enjoying this gruesome and entertaining twist on familiar Marvel superheroes.

Based on the world established in the Disney+ animated series *What If…?*, *Marvel Zombies* follows a group of people struggling to survive against superpowered zombies and save the world. IGN’s Jesse Schedeen gave it a positive review, scoring it 8 out of 10 and calling it “Great.” He noted that while the show can be predictable, it’s more satisfying than recent Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. He went on to elaborate:

What makes Marvel Zombies worth watching is its engaging character interactions and its success in developing relationships between heroes and villains from Phases 4 and 5 – something the main MCU often struggles with. The finale breaks away from typical Marvel formulas and delivers a truly spectacular battle, comparable to Avengers: Endgame. If you’re not fully invested in the current Multiverse Saga, this series offers a surprisingly refreshing and enjoyable experience.

Amon Warmann from Empire rated the show 4 out of 5 stars, praising Iman Vellani’s performance. He describes it as a creative and violent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though he feels it doesn’t quite fully succeed.

The animation really shines during the intense and violent fight scenes, particularly when powerful characters are involved. However, the story doesn’t quite deliver on its potential. While the idea of alternate universes allows for bold choices, the ending of Marvel Zombies is surprisingly cautious. It’s a bit of a disappointing conclusion to what was otherwise an enjoyable series.

Alex Maidy from JoBlo gave Marvel’s *Marvel Zombies* a rating of 7/10, calling it “Good” and the most graphically violent project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. While he thinks the show would work better as a continuing series similar to *What If…?*, Maidy believes viewers will still enjoy the four episodes. He then shared his detailed thoughts:

I really enjoyed the story, especially how it centered on Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Hawkeye, and included so many characters and nods to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s a quick, entertaining watch for fans who love spotting easter eggs and references. But even if you just watch it as a standalone horror story, it’s a solid take on the zombie genre, blending comic book elements with classic zombie tropes. Overall, Marvel Zombies is a fun, spooky watch perfect for Halloween, and it delivers on its concept, even if it could have gone further.

Jarrod Jones from AV Club rated the new zombie series a C-, praising the creative use of superpowers by the undead heroes. However, he ultimately found it lacking, stating it has “plenty of gore but no guts.”

As a big Marvel fan, I’ll say this new *Marvel Zombies* series is definitely a commitment. It’s packed with action and jokes, but you really have to *work* to keep up. Honestly, if you haven’t been following everything in the MCU Phases Four through Six closely, you’ll probably find yourself with a bunch of Wikipedia tabs open trying to figure out who everyone is and what their deal is. It’s a pretty intense, R-rated show – lots of gore and sound effects – and it feels like it’s *really* made for those of us who are totally invested in the details of the Marvel universe.

Tom Power from TechRadar also found the show lacking, noting that it has plenty of action but doesn’t quite deliver on its intellectual side. He gave the series a 3 out of 5-star rating, stating:

Marvel Zombies had the potential to be something special within Marvel’s animated offerings, but ultimately falls short. While it delivers genuinely scary, visually impressive, and atmospheric moments, the story itself quickly deteriorates. This results in a show that’s sporadically enjoyable, seldom truly excellent, and becomes progressively frustrating to watch.

Reviews for *Marvel Zombies* are mixed, but with episodes under 40 minutes, it’s shaping up to be a fast-paced and enjoyable watch. It offers a fresh take on familiar MCU characters like Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop, Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, and Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi-just be prepared for some graphic violence.

All four episodes of the new MCU miniseries can be streamed now on Disney+.
