Among the many upcoming “Yellowstone” spin-offs, I’m particularly looking forward to “Y: Marshals“, featuring Kayce. In the main series, I often felt that Kayce’s story was incomplete and lacked full development. Now, with a new opportunity, he can truly shine, but as Luke Grimes mentioned, they need to give him more freedom first. This might imply a significant shift in his life, and fans have an intriguing theory about what major event could bring this change. However, it’s unfortunate that this change may come at a tragic cost.
What Luke Grimes Said About Kayce Dutton’s Spinoff
Although Kayce’s show on CBS’s 2025-2026 schedule is still some time off, as it’s planned for early next year, Luke Grimes has been discussing his current project, the Western “Eddington,” set to premiere this month. During these interviews, he’s been queried about the new series featuring his Yellowstone character. Although he’s tight-lipped about details, he hinted to Brit and Co. that we can anticipate significant developments in the storyline.
In this new portrayal of Kayce Dutton, he seems remarkably distinct from his previous appearances. Early events set in motion allow him to break free and evolve into the character we initially hoped for.
The question now is, what events might lead to “releasing him from his current situation?” From the series summary, we can infer that Kayce will become part of an “elite team of U.S. Marshals” with the ranch no longer being a part of his immediate concerns. It appears there’s also a possibility for exploring his past as a Navy SEAL, where he might employ the abilities he’s developed as a cowboy and a SEAL in his new role.
In the finale of Yellowstone, Kayce appeared to be content at East Camp with Monica and Tate. But what might trigger such a significant shift in his life? A few speculative theories among fans suggest an unfortunate outcome, and I reluctantly find myself concurring with them.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’d gladly share my two cents on this! If you’re seeking out where to catch the gripping Yellowstone series, fret not! Most of these shows can be found streaming on Paramount+. For just $7.99 a month, you gain access to an extensive library of content from CBS, Paramount, and Paramount+. To elevate your experience even further, consider upgrading to the Premium tier for an additional $5.00 per month, which adds Showtime to your lineup. Enjoy the deal!
There’s One Tragic Theory Swirling Around What Will ‘Free’ Kayce Up
To start off, I’d like to share a couple of interesting points about this theory before we dive in. Initially, only the character named Kayce is explicitly stated in the show’s synopsis. Although Grimes hinted at “familiar faces” reappearing, their identities remain unknown as of now. This brings us to our second point: While the summary mentions that Kayce and his team will deal with the challenge of balancing family, duty, and the emotional strain associated with their work, there’s no mention of Kayce’s wife or son in it.
It seems strange that Monica and Tate weren’t mentioned, and there’s been no information about potential roles for Kelsey Asbille and Brecken Merrill in the upcoming series. This has led some fans to speculate, as evidenced by the theories they posted on Brit and Co.’s article, regarding the possible involvement of these actors.
- So Tate and Monica die I’m guessing…-Huck
- Sounds like Monica won’t be around anymore. -J McHugh
What’s causing me to consider the fans’ speculation is the uncertainty around whether Monica might reappear on Yellowstone, given Asbille’s situation remains unclear. Grimes hinted at something early in the series that sets Asbille free, but since the ranch has been destroyed and Rip, Beth, Jamie, and John are no longer alive, I don’t believe it’s related to that. With only Monica, Tate, and Kayce left, it seems they might continue living peacefully without any major complications.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’d put it this way: If Monica and Tate meet their end, it’ll undoubtedly stir up a whirlwind in Kayce’s life. He’d be compelled to seek a fresh purpose and motivation under such circumstances. Admittedly, it sounds grim, but their departure might pave the way for Grimes’ character to embark on an entirely new and distinct journey.
It seems that these fans might be heading in the right direction. But, we’ll need to be patient as “Marshals” is scheduled to debut next spring on CBS.
