John Sugden, played by Oliver Farnworth, fled in Wednesday’s episode of Emmerdale (September 24th, 2025), leaving viewers wondering what happens next after his dramatic confrontation with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley).
I was completely gripped by this scene! It turns out Caleb Miligan, played brilliantly by William Ash, was strong-armed into assisting John’s escape after Anthony – Nicholas Day in the role – ended up dead. Someone was using Anthony’s death to blackmail Caleb, forcing him to cover for John’s crimes. It was a really tense moment, understanding Caleb was acting under duress.
Instead of forcing John to leave, Caleb confronted him in the woods with a shotgun. This revealed that Cain was present, seeking revenge for John’s killing of his son, Nate (Jurell Carter).
The situation escalated, and John attempted to strike first, but Cain was ready and had already armed his weapon.
During Wednesday’s episode, a gunshot startled viewers. Caleb, worried about an email John was about to receive concerning Anthony’s murder, intervened when Cain tried to shoot John, knocking him unconscious with a shovel.
When Cain stumbled, his hand brushed the trigger, firing the weapon. Luckily, despite Cain losing consciousness, no one else was injured.
Caleb ordered twisted medic John to check on Cain, who they bundled into the boot of his car.
Caleb felt forced to go along with John’s scheme to keep his wife, Ruby (Beth Cordingly), from being imprisoned for killing her father, who had been abusive.

At the hospital, John’s injured husband, Aaron Dingle, and Mackenzie Boyd chatted before Mackenzie was discharged to go home.
Mack encouraged Aaron to reconnect with his former husband and the love of his life, Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley), playfully mentioning he missed seeing Aaron’s happy, sweet smile.
Aaron initially rejected the thought, but a little later, he was caught looking at Robert’s phone number, revealing how much he missed him.
Robert himself insisted to Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) that he would stay away as Aaron had asked.
John concealed himself in Caleb’s van while border officials inspected the vehicle. Once they passed through without being discovered, John told Caleb where he’d hidden Anthony’s body.
John destroyed the email that could have implicated him while Caleb watched. He was then left at a Rotterdam service station, and he asked Caleb to deliver two messages: tell Aaron he loved him, and tell Cain he was sorry about Nate.
In the car, Cain woke up and made his way into the driver’s seat, driving off in a hurry.
Now, with John seeming to have escaped, is this really the end of his story?
Has John Sugden gone for good in Emmerdale?

Since it’s still unclear if the character is gone for good, it seems unlikely that this is the end of their story, doesn’t it?
While it was satisfying to watch John face consequences, it doesn’t feel right for the villain to succeed in the end. Here are some ideas on how John could be definitively defeated.
How will John Sugden get his comeuppance?

Cain won’t accept this defeat easily, so even though John appears to have escaped, there’s a strong possibility he’ll be found and forced into one last showdown with the furious Dingle family.
Cain has multiple choices: he can kill John, or he can find another method to hold him accountable for what he’s done. Either way, John will face consequences.
If Cain told Caleb where the body is, could they work together to make it look like John killed Anthony?
People don’t want Ruby punished for this crime. Plus, those covering up the truth – and who have also been hurt by John – would be thrilled to see him blamed for something he didn’t do, on top of already wanting him to face justice for his real misdeeds.
Whether it’s Aaron, who’s recovering from his injuries, Cain, who’s dealing with loss, Chas, who was attacked, or even Moira Dingle (who still doesn’t know John was responsible for the farm’s slurry leak), taking revenge would give them all justice.
Regarding the leak, Mack was held responsible and suffered greatly because of John’s actions. Meanwhile, Victoria’s (Isabel Hodgins) son, Harry (Adam Pryor), almost died after drinking the poisoned water.
Okay, so I’ve been thinking… could Mack or Vic be involved in getting John caught? Maybe they’re working behind the scenes, and it gets even more interesting if Adam – you know, the one who’s been laying low overseas – is secretly helping them pull the strings? It’s a long shot, but it definitely feels like something’s brewing!
Robert has been consistently mistreated by his half-brother and deserves a final opportunity to talk to him directly.
Could John visit Aaron again, potentially leading Robert to intervene and decide John’s future, no matter what that future might be?
I have a feeling things are going to come to a head with John Sugden soon, and I’m expecting a big showdown before it’s all over. I think there’s going to be a major consequence for everything he’s been doing.
