WWE’s Macho Man Movie in The Works From SNL Favorite (& It’s So Much Better Than The Canceled Hulk Hogan Project)

Macho Man Randy Savage was one of the most exciting and popular wrestlers of all time, captivating fans for three decades. He became a true pop culture icon, known even by people who don’t follow wrestling. Now, a new movie will tell his life story, and early signs suggest it might be a more successful biopic than the one attempted for Hulk Hogan.

According to a new report from Deadline, Kenan Thompson, known for his work on *Saturday Night Live*, and Johnny Ryan Jr. are creating a movie about the life of wrestler Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage. Their production company, Artists for Artists, is behind the project, currently titled *Macho*. The script was written by Savage’s late brother, Lanny Poffo, and Eric Shapiro, and Kenan Thompson, Johnny Ryan Jr., and Paul Coy Allen of Midas Entertainment Group will produce the film.

Okay, so as a huge wrestling fan, I’m really stoked about this new project. Both myself and my co-worker, Ryan Jr., have always been massive Randy Savage fans. I actually had the chance to work with him back in ’99 when he was doing stuff with Nickelodeon, which was amazing. We’re both incredibly excited to finally bring his incredible charisma to the big screen and really capture the energy of ’80s wrestling for everyone.

Ryan Jr. stated that Randy Savage was the most captivating performer ever, a true rebel in the entertainment world. He praised Savage’s vibrant style, noting that he was more than just a performer – he was a cultural icon. Ryan Jr. also commended Lanny and Eric for brilliantly telling Savage’s story and capturing the energy of 1980s wrestling, which helped turn wrestlers into lasting pop culture figures.

Thompson expressed immense excitement about an upcoming project, stating that Macho Man is undeniably one of the all-time greats and they’re thrilled to be sharing his story on film.

According to Allen of Midas Entertainment Group, the story of MACHO is incredibly special and has the power to resonate with people of all ages. He expressed excitement about collaborating with AFA and Range Media to bring Randy’s story to a global audience.

What Happened to the Hulk Hogan Biopic?

A few years ago, Netflix was planning a movie about the life of Hulk Hogan, with Chris Hemsworth set to star as the wrestler. However, Hulk Hogan recently shared that the project was cancelled in 2024 because of a disagreement over a payment.

So, back when they were making that Hulk Hogan movie, Todd Phillips was directing, and Scott Silver had written the script. Hulk himself said the script was *really* dark, but in a good way – he thought it was so strong it could even snag Chris Hemsworth an Oscar. As a movie fan, that’s exciting to hear – a dark, powerful biopic with Hemsworth? Count me in!

Hogan explained that a detail in the contract was overlooked – a payment wasn’t made on time – following Patrick Bet-David’s comment about Netflix. He praised the script, calling it exceptional, and shared that Scott Silver, the writer behind films like *Joker* and *The Wolf of Wall Street*, considered it his best work yet. Hogan, who was enthusiastic about the script himself, added that he focused on sharing positive feedback about wrestling with Silver at the time (according to ScreenRant).

Hogan described working with the writer for around three years, noting the final product was intensely dark. He believed, however, that it might appeal to audiences. He was particularly struck by the potential performance of Chris Hemsworth, suggesting it could be Oscar-worthy, as there was discussion Hemsworth had never portrayed a real person before and this role was incredibly strong.

Why It’s the Perfect Time for Macho Man

I always thought a movie about Hulk Hogan would be amazing, but I can see why it’s complicated. There’s a lot of baggage and strong opinions surrounding him. Plus, honestly, he was *so* famous – a huge wrestling icon – that most of us already feel like we know his life story pretty well. It’s a tricky project, for sure.

Macho Man Randy Savage is widely recognized, but many fans only know his wrestling persona and not the details of his life. Unlike Hulk Hogan, who remained a public figure after retiring, Savage’s life wasn’t as thoroughly documented, especially before his unexpected passing in 2011. His full story hasn’t been told in this way before, and now is the ideal moment to do so.
