Emma Watson knows the deathly hallows of dating.
While she thinks dating is generally challenging, the former *Harry Potter* star explained that being famous makes it even harder. People often assume they know her based on her public persona, which creates unrealistic expectations and complicates things.
Emma described feeling disconnected when she sees her virtual self appear suddenly during online interactions. She explained on the September 24th episode of Jay Shetty’s *On Purpose* podcast that this can feel dehumanizing, and watching someone’s behavior drastically change is unsettling.
The 35-year-old, who was last seen with Kieran Brown, a classmate from Oxford, in July 2024, actually finds it amusing when she goes on dates with people who aren’t familiar with her work, likely due to her public profile.
You know, it’s funny – sometimes people actually apologize to me for not having seen my films, and I always tell them not to! Honestly, it’s a relief when they haven’t. It’s so much nicer when I don’t have to worry about people forming an idea of who I am based on my work, or having to constantly deal with that perception myself. It’s just…peaceful.
The *Beauty and the Beast* actress explained that while she wants people to enjoy her work, it’s a relief not to have to deal with added awkwardness or complications.
Even though being a public figure makes dating complicated, Emma-who has dated both Chord Overstreet and Johnny Simmons, a former costar from *Perks of Being a Wallflower*-realizes one thing is certain.
She pointed out that dating seems to be universally difficult and chaotic. This realization, she said, makes her feel less alone in her own experiences with it.
As for how Emma goes about dating?
“Dating apps are not on the cards for me,” she told British Vogue in 2022. “I’m very lucky in the sense that because I went to university and because I’ve done these other things outside of film, my friends are really good at setting me up.”
In fact, those friends may have previously been someone she went on a date with.
Emma added that some of her closest friends actually came from dates that didn’t lead to romance. She believes it proves that meaningful connections can still blossom even when a relationship doesn’t work out, and she thinks it’s a wonderful thing.
