The action game *Gungrave G.O.R.E.*, originally released for PC and consoles in 2022, is getting a revamped version called *Gungrave G.O.R.E. Blood Heat*. Iggymob, the game’s developer, completely rebuilt the game for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A trailer for the new version was revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2025 and can be viewed below.
Similar to the original *Gungrave G.O.R.E.*, *Blood Heat* continues the story directly after *Gungrave VR*, with the Gunslinger of Resurrection battling the Raven Clan. The game promises an epic and emotional narrative centered around themes of revenge, love, and loyalty. It features a classic arcade-style action experience with combo counters and fast-paced gameplay, intentionally avoiding modern mechanics like a cover system despite being a third-person shooter with melee combat.
The upcoming game, *Gungrave G.O.R.E. Blood Heart*, is being built with a new engine, offering improved graphics and updated gameplay. It will also include the heritage system and several brand-new playable characters.
The *Gungrave* series first launched in 2002 with the original game on PlayStation 2. A sequel, *Gungrave Overdose*, followed in 2004, but then the series went quiet for many years. In 2018, *Gungrave VR* was released for PlayStation VR, bringing the franchise back into the spotlight and generating renewed interest in the *Gungrave* universe.
I’ve been a fan of this series for a while now, and it all started with this awesome character, Beyond the Grave – a gunslinger brought back to life using some really cool, futuristic tech called the Necrolization Project. The first story was about a young girl named Mika who needed his protection. Then, the sequel jumped ahead three years, and Mika actually *revived* Beyond the Grave again, this time to fight against a dangerous new drug called SEED. It turned out SEED was a big deal, because it ended up being central to the plot in all the games that came after!
Gungrave VR marks a new direction for the series, as it’s the first game created by Iggymob instead of the original developer, Red Entertainment. The story centers on the Raven Clan’s control over the distribution of SEED in a dangerous region of Southeast Asia called Scumland. The game includes references to past titles, with new characters revealed to be related to familiar faces – for example, Cheni Angel is the granddaughter of Richard Wong from Gungrave Overdose.
The world of *Gungrave* grew beyond video games with an anime series released in 2003. Though based on the first game, the anime offers a different take on the story, centering on Brandon, a street tough, and how meeting Beyond the Grave transforms his life.
As of now, there’s no confirmed release date for *Gungrave G.O.R.E. Blood Heat*. You can find more information in our review of the first game.
