The characters in ‘All the Devils Are Here‘ are deeply flawed – untrustworthy, greedy, or simply unlikeable, often all three. They’re not politicians, but a small group of criminals led by the cynical veteran Ronnie (Eddie Marsan). His crew includes the violent Grady (Sam Claflin) and the more impressionable Royce (Tienne Simon). Tasked by a higher-ranking gangster, Harold (Rory Kinnear), who works for the mysterious Mr. Reynolds, the gang commits a bank robbery. They then hide out in a remote cottage with Numbers (Burn Gordon), Mr. Reynolds’ accountant, who is battling a serious drug addiction. Numbers is put in charge of securing the stolen money in the cottage’s single bedroom while they wait for instructions. He spends his time using heroin and listening to Cilla Black records – it’s suggested that being confined with her music might be contributing to his issues, though it’s never explicitly stated. The isolation and the constant sound of her voice certainly don’t help.
Everyone’s getting on edge, because they initially thought they’d only be at the cottage for a week. Grady, who already violently attacked a guard during the robbery, has a quick temper, and Ronnie wants to leave him and the cottage immediately. Royce is caught in the middle, unsure where his loyalties lie.
This film, often compared to ‘Reservoir Dogs’, is a tense British crime story that explores the events following a heist. Like Tarantino’s classic, it uses flashbacks to reveal how each character became involved with the criminal Mr. Reynolds. Featuring a strong cast, including the consistently excellent Eddie Marsan, Sam Claflin delivers a surprisingly unhinged performance, and Burn Gordon is compelling as the accountant responsible for the stolen money. Overall, it’s a solid and entertaining addition to the British gangster film genre, especially considering its low budget.
We spoke with actor Burn Gordon and director Barnaby Roper, and our conversation covered a surprising range of topics – from drugs and violence to the iconic Cilla Black!
