Microsoft is adding a new feature to the Photos app on Windows 11: automatic organization using artificial intelligence. The app will now sort your photos into categories using AI. This feature is currently being tested with early users and should be available to everyone in the next few weeks.
The latest app update introduces new folders and uses artificial intelligence to automatically sort your photos. It intelligently groups pictures into categories like receipts, IDs, notes, and screenshots, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.
Auto-Categorization uses artificial intelligence to automatically sort your photos into helpful groups like screenshots, receipts, IDs, and notes. This saves you time, keeps your photo library organized, and makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. This feature processes everything directly on your device, but requires a Copilot+ PC with a powerful Neural Processing Unit (NPU) – at least 40 TOPS is needed.
You can check out the full outline of AI-powered categorization features coming to Photos below.
- Smart sorting into categories: Photos are automatically grouped into predefined folders based on visual content, such as handwritten notes, printed documents, or receipts.
- Language-agnostic recognition: The AI model can identify document types regardless of the language in the image. For example, a Hungarian passport will still be categorized as “Passport,” even if the text isn’t in English.
- Explore your organized photo library with Auto-Categorization in Photos.
- Use the Left Nav or Search bar to find categorized images instantly.
- Change categories manually or provide feedback to improve accuracy.
The Photos app on Windows 11 has received several new AI-powered features over the past year. With the recent release of Copilot+ PCs, it’s become a powerful photo editor, now offering tools like AI-powered spot and background removal, among other improvements.
You can now try out our new AI-powered categories feature! It’s available for testing in version 2025.11090.25001.0 or later. If you’re a member of the Windows Insider Program, you can install it through the Microsoft Store.
