Doctor Who legend reveals what he’d change if he returned to the series

While the BBC has assured fans that Doctor Who will continue, its return date is still uncertain. However, a well-respected former producer of the show has shared thoughts on how it could evolve when it comes back.

At a recent event celebrating the release of the Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 13 Blu-ray, producer Philip Hinchcliffe (who worked on the show from 1974 to 1977) shared his thoughts on what the current series is missing.

Hinchcliffe oversaw a highly regarded period for the show, producing memorable stories like ‘The Seeds of Doom’ and ‘Pyramids of Mars’ that fans still love.

Despite saying he didn’t think anyone would ask him back to work on Doctor Who creatively, Philip Hinchcliffe believes the show would benefit from returning to its original structure of stories lasting either 100 minutes or being divided into four 25-minute parts.

“That’s a very good time for a movie or a television story to be told, in 100 minutes,” he said.

This approach allows you to develop your characters and reveal the central conflict – the core mystery and what’s causing the problems. You have enough space to build genuine connections with all of them, not just the main heroes, and to include unexpected twists and build suspense. It doesn’t require constant action to keep things interesting.

He continued: “To try and tell an interesting story in 50 minutes is very difficult.

I think the episode should be around 100 minutes long. That length would allow us to develop the supporting characters, not just focus on the Doctor, and give the story the space it needs to breathe. That’s what I believe would make it stronger.

The latest season of Doctor Who ended in May with a surprising twist: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor transformed into Billie Piper. However, it’s still unclear if she will actually become the next Doctor.

Wow, that finale just blew everyone away, and honestly, we’re all still reeling and eager to find out what happens next! I was reading that Disney, who partners with the BBC on the show, doesn’t actually need to commit to more seasons until after the spin-off, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea,’ airs. Apparently, they’re waiting until 2026 to make that decision, so we’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of us, but at least there’s *something* on the horizon!

Despite recent discussions, BBC leaders have emphasized that the future of Doctor Who is secure. Kate Phillips, the BBC’s chief content officer, stated at the Edinburgh TV Festival that the show isn’t going anywhere and will continue to air on the BBC, even if a partnership with Disney doesn’t happen.

Fans can revisit Matt Smith’s first season as the Doctor this fall when it starts airing again on BBC Three, providing entertainment while they wait for new episodes.

You can now pre-order Doctor Who: The Collection – Season 13, which will be released on October 20th.
