The recent postponement of the newest spinoff from ‘The Walking Dead‘ indicates that the original series should come back for season 12, wrapping up current issues and paving the way for a compelling future. Previously, the final episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ spawned several spinoffs, including the ongoing ‘Dead City’, as well as ‘Daryl Dixon’, with the concluded miniseries ‘The Ones Who Live’.
The second season of “Dead City” concluded in June 2025, and the third season of “Daryl Dixon” is set to return to AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, September 7. These shows continue the stories from the original series, although they are not directly connected. However, they both serve as compelling reasons for the main series’ twelfth season to take place at some point in the future.
Dead City & Daryl Dixon Have Very Different Production Schedules

Despite the fact that these spinoffs share common characters, they’ve followed distinct trajectories since their debut in 2023. For instance, while Daryl Dixon has consistently released a new season every September, Dead City faced a two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2 due to significant differences in their production schedules.
Production for Daryl Dixon’s second season kicked off shortly after wrapping up the first one, and by then, progress was substantial enough that the 2023 Hollywood strikes barely made a dent in its production. Notably, seasons 3 and 4 have already been filmed, with the current season 4 underway as of now. The cast of Daryl Dixon has been regularly filming fresh episodes.
As a passionate cinephile, I couldn’t help but notice that the production of Dead City season 2 didn’t kick off until April 2024 – nearly a full year after the gripping conclusion of season 1. Unfortunately, this delay was due to unforeseen circumstances that halted production earlier than expected. Consequently, unlike Daryl Dixon who managed to stay ahead of schedule, we found ourselves playing catch-up. To make matters more challenging, the filming location was shifted from the bustling streets of New York City to Boston, which could introduce new complications for season 2.
The significant variations in filming led to a nearly two-year gap between the release of Dead City season 2 and season 1, whereas Daryl Dixon consistently rolls out a new season each year. Although there’s no official confirmation about Dead City season 3 yet, it might address this issue. Nevertheless, another feasible alternative for these delays could be found.
The Walking Dead Season 12 Happening Would Resolve The Delay Problem
The Franchise Could Embrace The Release Schedule That Made It So Successful
The production delays in Dead City could potentially be addressed if The Walking Dead season 12 were to materialize. At present, the storylines have been divided into separate narratives. However, it’s important to note that the characters are from the same Virginia communities, and have been significant figures in the main show for several years, which suggests a potential connection between the different stories.
As a dedicated movie critic, I must express my thoughts on the potential return of Dead City for its 12th season. If this were to occur, it could markedly reduce the production-related hurdles that have previously plagued Dead City specifically.
Emulating the original series’ 16-episode structure, a fresh season could be effortlessly filmed using the same annual production timeline as previous seasons. This consistent approach would diminish the chances of delays significantly, ensuring a smoother and more predictable production process.
Every October, without fail, The Walking Dead would return to our screens, running for eight episodes before taking a break until February the following year. Should season 12 reunite spinoff characters, it would provide continuity by maintaining a structured timeline, preventing any deviations in production scheduling.
In other words, reintroducing characters who haven’t appeared for a while, like Rick and Michonne, could become a focus again in season 12 of The Walking Dead, as it was left off with them returning to Alexandria. This development not only seems plausible but also aligns well with the series’ natural progression.
The Walking Dead Season 12 Is The Next Logical Narrative Step
It’s Inevitable Everyone’s Stories Will Come Together Once Again
Regardless of its potential impact on production issues, The Walking Dead’s season 12 appears to be a natural progression for the series. Scott Gimple, the chief creative officer, has hinted at plans for crossovers between Dead City and Daryl Dixon at some point down the line. Both shows are currently developing their respective stories before such a crossover takes place.
Despite the stories of Dead City and Daryl Dixon appearing quite separate from each other, the fact that they’re part of the same series suggests a reunion is bound to happen eventually. Characters like Daryl and Carol, who are on a journey to return to Virginia communities, will inevitably find themselves in America at some point.
Regarding “Dead City,” it seems like the plot is heading towards a point where Maggie and Negan might need to leave Manhattan. But given that New Babylon could pose a risk now that they’ve taken over the city, it’s uncertain if this means they’ll go back to their old neighborhood, the Bricks, or be pushed even deeper south, perhaps back to their earlier locations.
Regardless of how the spinoffs unfold, it appears that the franchise should carry on with Season 12 from both a storytelling and production perspective. Eventually, the shows will need to reunite, tying up various character arcs by bringing back familiar faces like Rick and Daryl for some long-awaited interactions.
Restarting the spinoff production on an annual basis could also eliminate potential setbacks in its progression, considering that having just one show would return to a yearly production cycle. Even though there’s still lots of storytelling to be explored before reaching this stage, it appears to be a logical direction for the franchise as it progresses, especially given the recent delays.
