This post contains spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2
James Gunn intentionally didn’t send the last three episodes of *Peacemaker* Season 2 to reviewers, hoping to keep the big surprises under wraps. This led fans to believe these episodes would be packed with major connections to the wider DC Universe and significant reveals. A popular theory emerged that we’d see David Corenswet as Superman before the season ends, and excitement exploded when a photo of Corenswet and John Cena in costume together on set went viral. However, James Gunn’s recent comments suggest that photo didn’t foreshadow what fans were expecting.
After the premiere of *Peacemaker* Season 2, Episode 6, which included a guest appearance by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, James Gunn spoke with *Variety* about whether Superman might also appear on the show. He confirmed that Superman won’t be involved, noting that David (presumably referring to someone involved with Superman) was disappointed that Nicholas Hoult got to be on the show instead. Gunn explained that Lex Luthor was needed for a specific storyline, and that the events involving Lex and Rick Flag will directly impact the plot of *Man of Tomorrow*. He also hinted that the connection between Rick Flag and Lex Luthor could create problems for Superman and other people with superpowers.
James Gunn Debunking Superman Fan Theories Is for the Best
It’s common for those involved in big movie and TV franchises to be secretive about what’s coming, so some fans think James Gunn might be deliberately misleading them. But Gunn has a history of being open and honest, often addressing rumors and setting the record straight about his projects. Recently, he explained that a Batman logo spotted on the set of *Clayface* hadn’t been approved by him, clarifying that it never came across his desk.
It’s unusual that James Gunn would directly lie about David Corenswet (Superman) appearing in *Peacemaker*. He could have easily avoided the question, but he chose to state clearly that Corenswet won’t have a cameo. While some fans might be let down, it’s probably a good thing Gunn is clarifying this now. It gives viewers time to adjust their expectations for the final two episodes. Instead of speculating about a Corenswet appearance, they can simply enjoy the story Gunn and the team have created, and focus on what’s happening with the 11th Street Kids.
James Gunn’s decision to avoid forcing a Superman appearance shows he prioritizes a strong story. The Lex Luthor cameo in Episode 6 felt natural because it connected to Rick Flag Sr.’s plot – Lex has the means to help him find Peacemaker’s portal. It also cleverly hints at future Superman stories without overshadowing the current one. While a Superman appearance, even from an alternate universe, would have been exciting, Gunn didn’t want it to feel like a meaningless fan moment. He considered it, but ultimately cut the idea because it didn’t fit the story.
John Cena seems to have been honest about why he was on the set of the new *Superman* movie. He was there to offer advice and support to the lead actor. This visit could hint at a future team-up between their characters in the DC Universe. With Superman set to be a central figure and Peacemaker’s storyline continuing (even with the revelation about his ideal world), James Gunn’s decade-long plan for the DCU leaves room for many potential crossovers.
