The trio of Gotham City Sirens – Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy – are back in action, squaring off against an adversary that surpasses them in power. Bringing these characters together was a clever move before, but it proves to be even more brilliant now. In the debut issue of “Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit“, writer Leah Williams and artist Haining deliver an entertaining escapade. The storyline follows the ladies as they probe some peculiar activities at Gotham’s newest nightclub. Although it starts out as a typical heist plot, things escalate as the story unfolds and the true mastermind behind the chaos – Despero – is unveiled.
One of the most formidable adversaries of the Justice League is Despero, capable of matching wits with the mightiest heroes across the DC Multiverse. Although Catwoman, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy make a formidable team – with Poison Ivy’s command over nature being particularly hazardous – Despero is in a league of his own when it comes to them. The first issue of Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Orbit promises an engaging read, and with Despero orchestrating events, things are bound to get even more intriguing as the story unfolds. Given Despero’s rich history with the Justice League, the Gotham City Sirens might have taken on more than they can handle.
Despero Has Been Battling the Justice League Since the Silver Age
For a considerable length of time, Despero has been at odds with the Justice League, making his debut in the first issue of Justice League of America (Vol. 1). Originally hailing from Kalanor, he utilized his mental abilities to conquer various planets before targeting the recently established Justice League, thus igniting one of their most enduring rivalries. Throughout the years, Despero has faced numerous iterations of the Justice League, transforming significantly as a villain. Initially, he was a standard-sized adversary, relying on his mental powers and intellect to engage the team. Post-“Crisis,” however, Despero assumed a new form, becoming a towering mountain of muscle capable of engaging in physical combat with Martian Manhunter. Despite having an extensive history, Despero has not been particularly prominent for a long time. His battles were mainly confined to the Justice League International, and he did not make any substantial moves until JSA/JLA: Vice and Virtue, where he collaborated with Johnny Sorrow, impersonating President Lex Luthor in an attempt to destroy both the Justice League and the Justice Society. Since then, Despero has not made much of an impact; his appearances during the New 52 were largely as expected, and apart from a confrontation with Hawkman, he has not been a significant enemy for the League in recent times.
Despero is a villain who may not be as powerful as he once was, but don’t underestimate him. He has taken down strong versions of the Justice League and can hold his own against characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter. Known for his strategic skills, Despero has been trying to rebuild his power for a long time. His current plan involves something called the Conduit, which Catwoman is after, and a club shaped like a UFO called Lunaria. The Sirens manage to infiltrate the club thanks to Poison Ivy’s abilities, only to discover that the Conduit isn’t an artifact but a young boy. This unexpected twist puts the trio in a difficult position as they hadn’t planned on rescuing a child. However, their cover is blown by the time they find the Conduit, as they had been detected by the mind-controlled guards who informed Despero about the Sirens. But it turns out that this entire situation was part of Despero’s plan, making things more complicated than they initially thought.
Despero Expecting Trouble Is the Worst Thing that Could Happen for the Sirens
The news of the Sirens being sought by Despero is disheartening for the heroes. While it’s clear that Despero far surpasses their combined strength, this isn’t their main concern. What truly poses a threat is Despero’s cunning intellect. If he anticipates someone to arrive for the Conduit, it signals a potentially hazardous situation. There are few situations more terrifying than Despero with a strategy, particularly once you’ve already stepped into his domain.
The Sirens possess impressive abilities – Catwoman matches Batman’s league, Harley regularly outsmarts Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and Poison Ivy’s powers make her the most formidable among them. However, Despero with his plan might be more than they can handle. The enigma surrounding the Conduit and Despero’s intentions for it is intriguing, as he seems to anticipate someone challenging him for it. The Gotham City Sirens are bracing themselves for a tough challenge ahead.
