The first season of *Marvel’s What If…?* really impressed viewers with an episode that brought the world of *Marvel Zombies* into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, creating a universe filled with undead Avengers. Because that episode was so popular, Marvel has revisited that world with a new series. This week, the four-episode first season of *Marvel Zombies* was released, continuing the story and delivering even more intense action, violence, and zombie mayhem than before.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really surprised by just how many characters they crammed into *Marvel Zombies*, and honestly, even more shocking was how many of them actually *lived*! Still, don’t get too attached, because a lot of our heroes don’t make it through the four episodes. I’ve put together a ranking of every hero’s death from the first season, and trust me, some are way more impactful (and better done) than others. Warning: major spoilers ahead if you haven’t watched yet!
18) Red Guardian
Red Guardian’s storyline ends rather abruptly and disappointingly – he’s turned into a zombie after eating bad meat in New Asgard, which feels a bit anticlimactic despite fitting his character. However, he does have one memorable moment, taking out zombie Captain America early on, making his appearance somewhat worthwhile.
17) Thor
Chris Hemsworth doesn’t have a lot of screen time as Thor in this series, but he delivers his lines with impact. While Thor’s role in the overall story is intriguing and different from how he’s usually portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his off-screen death and transformation into a zombie feel like a forced plot twist intended to shock the audience – though it doesn’t really succeed in being surprising.
16) Melina
Melina’s death, though a selfless act, feels surprisingly ordinary. She’s killed by a Vibranium spear wielded by a zombie – a fate that could have befallen her in almost any world, and doesn’t feel particularly unique within this horror setting.
15) Valkyrie
This moment comes with a warning: it’s unclear if Valkyrie actually dies, even though she’s stabbed in the same way as Melina. While it’s slightly more impactful than Melina’s death because we see the immediate reaction and Valkyrie’s fierce fight, it’s still not a particularly striking or original death scene. We’re ranking it low because it might not be a death at all, and if it is, it lacks visual flair.
14) Shang-Chi
Shang-Chi’s death in the zombie movie is surprisingly simple: he’s bitten from behind by a zombie. Despite having easily defeated numerous zombies throughout the series, his demise feels like a cheap shock tactic, happening purely by chance rather than as a logical consequence of the situation.
13) Yelena
Okay, so even with the frustrating tendency to show things *around* the action instead of the action itself, Yelena’s storyline in this series really landed for me. The writing was strong, and Florence Pugh absolutely *killed* it – it’s a truly memorable scene. More importantly, it felt completely authentic to her character; it wasn’t some out-of-nowhere emotional beat, but a natural progression for the hero we’ve come to know. It’s easily one of the most powerful dramatic moments in the whole series.
12) Black Panther
The *Marvel Zombies* storyline continues to show heartbreaking losses, revealing that T’Challa, the Black Panther, also perished after the events of the *What If..?* episode that kicked off the series. During a battle with the zombie Thanos – who still had several Infinity Stones – T’Challa sacrificed himself to defeat the Mad Titan and prevent the zombie outbreak from spreading beyond Wakanda. Although tragic, his sacrifice ultimately led to the creation of the Infinity Hulk, making it a meaningful act.
11) Jimmy Woo
Jimmy Woo is quickly overwhelmed and killed by zombies in New Asgard, mirroring a typical death scene in a zombie movie. It’s a brutal moment, amplified by Randall Park’s realistic screams. However, Jimmy Woo wasn’t a particularly prominent character throughout the series, so his death doesn’t have a huge impact on the overall story.
10) Wenwu
Wenwu’s appearance in *Marvel Zombies* was a pleasant surprise. His fate manages to be both heroic and fitting for a zombie story. After seeing Shang-Chi get bitten, Wenwu throws his ten rings to his son, stopping the transformation and potentially creating a new hero. He’s then overwhelmed and eaten by a swarm of zombies, a moment that will please horror fans. This scene shows there was more depth to Wenwu than we first realized, and it adds emotional weight to Shang-Chi’s journey in the series.
9) Kate Bishop
The death of Kate Bishop – shockingly blasted by zombie Captain Marvel after being hit with an arrow from a party favor – was a truly unforgettable moment, both terrifying and funny. It’s easily one of the most memorable deaths in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and thankfully, it only happened in this alternate reality.
8) Rocket & Groot
It’s surprising how many characters in the *Marvel Zombies* series are defeated not by zombies themselves, but by powerful energy blasts. When Rocket and Groot reappear in the show, it mirrors their introduction in *Avengers: Infinity War*, but they’re quickly destroyed by zombie Thanos. While their deaths aren’t the most upsetting moments in the series, what happens immediately afterward is truly heartbreaking.
7) Rintrah
I was really bummed to see this character back in the MCU, only to have him go down like that! He fought so bravely against Wanda’s zombie army, but they just kept coming. He ended up getting overwhelmed and pierced with spears, but honestly, it was a pretty heroic death. A true warrior’s end, even though it was sad to watch.
6) The New Black Widows
In *Marvel Zombies*, we learn that Alexei has been training a new team of Black Widows to fight the zombies. Unfortunately, their training isn’t enough, and they’re quickly defeated by Ghost, who is now a zombie. This scene is particularly well-done, featuring both exciting Marvel-style action and the series’ signature horror elements – a perfect example of what makes *Marvel Zombies* so compelling.
5) Sara and the London Master
The characters weren’t particularly interesting, but their deaths were surprisingly funny and shocking. During the battle against Wanda’s zombies, they were accidentally hit by a falling zombie Thor. A powerful beam of energy vaporized them, leaving only their skeletal remains, which Thor then casually scattered. It was a darkly humorous moment – the kind of over-the-top death the show could have used more of, playfully acknowledging the absurdity while still being unsettling.
4) Baron Zemo
Baron Zemo’s death is particularly shocking for two reasons. First, he’s killed in a gruesome way – an Asgardian zombie literally rips his heart out. Second, this happens immediately after he says his last line, “I deeply regret meeting all of you.” It’s a darkly humorous, shocking moment that feels true to Zemo’s character.
3) Death Dealer
This character, one of the most visually striking in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, truly gets to stand out in *Marvel Zombies*, taking down the undead with inventive methods. Their death is so impactful-a brutal crushing by Asgardian zombies-and the series effectively shocks viewers by killing off a previously menacing villain, silently and gruesomely.
2) Blade
As a fan, Blade’s death in *Marvel Zombies* really hit hard. We’d been waiting *years* to see him get a proper spotlight in the MCU, and it was so unexpected! What made it even worse – and honestly, amazing – was *how* they animated it. So many characters die from energy beams from the sky in that series, but Blade’s death stood out. They switched up the animation style, going for something more anime-inspired instead of the usual cel-shading, and it was a really shocking and visually stunning moment – honestly, some of the best animation in the whole series.
1) John Walker
I have to say, even in *Marvel Zombies*, with all the shocking deaths, one really stuck with me. It happened so fast, you could easily miss it! Baron Zemo’s forces were battling zombie Namor on the raft, and John Walker tried to intervene. But Namor, as a zombie, was just too strong. He literally ripped Walker in half – it was brutal and honestly, one of the most shocking moments in the whole series.
The show doesn’t shy away from the violence, depicting Walker’s demise in graphic detail – first in slow motion, then immediately showing the gruesome aftermath. We see Zemo looking down at Walker’s severed upper body, a pool of blood forming, and his spine exposed. Despite the horror, it’s surprisingly darkly humorous. It’s a perfect, R-rated on-screen death for a show about superhero zombies, fully embracing the show’s premise.
