The upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday* is bringing back a surprising number of familiar faces! Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role, and he’ll be joined by other MCU veterans like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Sebastian Stan. The movie will also feature newer stars such as Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, and Vanessa Kirby. But the biggest buzz surrounds the actors from the *X-Men* films, who are also joining the cast.
Patrick Stewart has already been in a Marvel project, but most of his former colleagues from the X-Men haven’t. With Marvel planning to restart the X-Men series, this could be their final opportunity to play superheroes. However, a few of the mutants from the *Doomsday* movie might get another chance because they’re also appearing in the *Deadpool* franchise. Even so, the upcoming *Avengers* film could negatively impact how these characters are viewed, so it might be best if they don’t stay around for too long.
Gambit Is Going to Put His Serious Face on in Avengers: Doomsday
The biggest draw of *Deadpool & Wolverine* is seeing Deadpool and Wolverine team up. Deadpool has always wanted to fight alongside Logan, and he finally gets the chance when the Time Variance Authority puts his entire timeline at risk. However, after finding a new Wolverine, the TVA exiles both mutants to a desolate place called the Void. They soon meet Cassandra Nova, who offers them a deal, but the heroes refuse to work for her. Their travels then lead them to a group of rebels, including Elektra, X-23, Blade, and Gambit.
After saving the entire multiverse from Cassandra Nova, the team deserves a major reward. Deadpool is heading home to see his friends, and he’s bringing Wolverine and X-23 with him. What happens to the rest of the crew is still unknown. So far, only Gambit is confirmed to return, and his strong Cajun accent is so distinctive that even the quick-witted Deadpool has trouble keeping up! The movie *Deadpool & Wolverine* really emphasizes how funny Gambit is, highlighting the absurdity of a hero who fights with playing cards. However, Channing Tatum has revealed that Gambit will be a bit more serious in future films, with a less exaggerated accent. Apparently, the Russo brothers are aiming for a different tone than the over-the-top style of *Deadpool*, which could be a problem for another actor involved.
Deadpool Won’t Be Any Help If Avengers: Doomsday Tones Him Down
There’s been a lot of discussion about whether Deadpool will be in the upcoming *Doomsday* movie, but everything suggests he’ll finally get to team up with the Avengers. He’ll probably appear with the X-Men, helping them fight against Doom’s plan to take over the multiverse. Having Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool should make the action scenes even better, but it’s important that he’s allowed to be his full, unfiltered self – witty banter and all – to make his appearance truly worthwhile. The whole reason to include Deadpool is to let him be Deadpool, flaws and all.
If the directors, the Russo brothers, aren’t confident they can blend Deadpool’s humor with the tone of the Avengers, it’s best to simplify things. They could let another team handle Deadpool’s first meeting with the Avengers. It would be a loss, considering *Avengers: Infinity War* successfully maintained the comedic style of *Guardians of the Galaxy*, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe can’t afford risks right now. Introducing a character known for strong language and constantly seeking attention is a particularly big gamble.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
