Sylvester Stallone has shone brightly in numerous successful film series, ranging from Rocky and Rambo to The Expendables and Guardians of the Galaxy. Yet, some fans might have overlooked the fact that this actor was part of an action-packed series from the 2010s, which is now available for streaming on [platform name].
The Escape Plan movie series, consisting of Escape Plan (released in 2013), Escape Plan 2: Hades (in 2018), and Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019), has just been added to a popular free streaming service. Although not particularly praised by critics, the Escape Plan trilogy is notable as it was the first time Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger shared the lead roles in a movie. Known as the dominant action stars of the 1980s (and much of the ’90s), these two had never before starred together in an action film until Escape Plan. Although they had collaborated earlier on The Expendables and its 2012 sequel, Schwarzenegger’s role in those films was relatively minor as his character Trench.
In the initial installment of “Escape Plan,” Mikael Håfström served as the director, with Sylvester Stallone taking on the role of Ray Breslin, a former lawyer who has transitioned into testing prison security. Breslin is himself imprisoned in an undisclosed, highly secure global facility, prompting him to enlist fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, for assistance in orchestrating an escape. The action-packed prison thriller also featured Jim Caviezel, Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), Vinnie Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Amy Ryan. While reviews for “Escape Plan” were mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes citing a 50% approval rating, the film proved to be financially successful, earning $137 million globally against an estimated production budget of approximately $70 million.
Arnold Schwarzenegger didn’t reappear for the two Escape Plan sequels, which bypassed cinemas and were exclusively released on video in the U.S. Instead, Dave Bautista took over as a joint lead for the series, having gained prominence in the entertainment industry during the gap between Escape Plan and its follow-up, due to his portrayal of Drax in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, the reception of the Escape Plan sequels wasn’t as warm as that for the Guardians movies; both Hades and The Extractors were panned by critics on Rotten Tomatoes with scores of 7% and 25%, respectively.
What Has Sylvester Stallone Done Since Escape Plan?
After wrapping up the Escape Plan trilogy and reappearing as Barney Ross in 2023’s Expend4bles (a movie that flopped both critically and commercially), he moved on to television stardom, playing the lead in a scripted series for the first time. He also wrote the screenplay for the latest action film headlined by Jason Statham titled A Working Man, directed by David Ayer, and serves as an executive producer on the upcoming sports biopic Giant, focusing on the life of boxer Prince Naseem Hamed.
Escape Plan, Escape Plan 2: Hades, and Escape Plan: The Extractors are currently streaming on Tubi.
