The 5 Worst Things Doctor Strange Ever Did in the Name of Magic

Before becoming Doctor Strange, Stephen Strange was a highly skilled but arrogant surgeon, and losing the use of his hands didn’t change his ego. Becoming the Sorcerer Supreme actually amplified his flaws, as he sometimes made questionable choices and misused his powers while supposedly protecting the world. Strange often acts as if he alone knows the right course of action, leading him to use magic selfishly and justify his actions to himself, even when they’re irresponsible.

Doctor Strange has made some serious mistakes, from outright harmful acts to poor choices disguised as doing the right thing. Here’s a look at the worst things he’s done while using magic.

5) He Manipulated Magical Children in Strange Academy

Doctor Strange isn’t a very good teacher, especially considering how he runs Strange Academy, a school he started for a hidden purpose. He accepted magically gifted children, offering them both education and training to control their powers, but his motives weren’t entirely honest.

He kept dangerous secrets from the children, and actively worked to prevent them from becoming powerful. This led Emily Bright to become malicious when she discovered Strange was being dishonest. His secrets also put Doyle Dormammu in harm’s way. The children nearly lost their lives due to Strange’s manipulation of their magical abilities, and he showed no concern for their well-being.

4) Erased Captain America’s Memories of The Illuminati

The Illuminati made several questionable decisions, and Doctor Strange was often involved, usually by going along with their plans. This included sending Hulk to Sakaar and their dealings with the Skrulls, which ultimately led to the events of the *Secret Invasion*. Later, when the threat of Incursions arose and Captain America destroyed an Earth using the Infinity Gauntlet to protect their own, the Illuminati declared they wouldn’t allow any further Earths to be sacrificed.

Tony Stark asked Doctor Strange to erase Captain America’s memories of the Illuminati, the dangerous Incursions, and everything they did. Like Professor X has done before, Strange misused his powers for personal reasons, and this nearly led to global catastrophe.

3) Doctor Strange Turned His Brother Into a Vampire

Before becoming a sorcerer, Stephen Strange was a doctor. His mother’s death during his early training deeply affected him, causing him to become distant and self-centered. He prioritized his career over his patients’ well-being. When his father fell ill, Strange didn’t visit, still grieving his mother, and his father passed away before they could reconcile.

His brother angrily criticized him, but Strange didn’t pay attention. Sadly, his brother was then hit by a car and killed. Strange, refusing to accept this loss, put the body in storage, hoping to find a way to bring him back to life. After learning magic, he successfully resurrected his brother, though he didn’t know he was bringing him back as a vampire. This proved to be a nightmare, as Victor was forced to feed on the blood of criminals. Ultimately, overwhelmed by his new existence, Victor took his own life to escape the suffering.

2) Doctor Strange Will Place Demons In Killers’ Minds

A key responsibility of the Sorcerer Supreme is preventing supernatural beings from entering their dimension. When Doctor Strange captures a demon, he has four choices: send it back to its home dimension or destroy it. If neither of those options work, he’s left with only two possibilities, and only one of them is ethically sound.

One way to contain these demons is to trap them in a force field or a secure container. Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Santorium is full of such containment methods and locked rooms. However, there’s one final, desperate option. If a demon can only be contained within a living being, Doctor Strange has been forced to imprison them inside the minds of convicted murderers serving life sentences. While these individuals are dangerous criminals, this is an exceptionally harsh punishment, arguably one that no one should endure, no matter what they’ve done.

1) He Taught Doctor Doom Magic

Doctor Strange’s biggest mistake was sharing his magical knowledge with Doctor Doom, a decision that has caused a lot of problems. Although Strange meant well – he felt obligated to help Doom save his mother from the demon Mephisto – teaching Doom magic proved to be a terrible error.

Doctor Strange trained Doctor Doom in magic, and together they saved Doom’s mother’s soul. Afterwards, Doom used this magic to nearly kill Reed Richards and fatally injure The Thing. He leveraged his magical abilities to govern Battleworld during the *Secret Wars* event, and eventually became Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. With this power, he conquered the world as depicted in *One World Under Doom*. Ultimately, Doctor Strange was responsible for all of this.
