Okay, so I was reading an interview with Matthew Lillard, and he revealed which death in the *Scream* movies hits him the hardest – and surprisingly, it wasn’t even Stu Macher’s! He actually named a different character’s death as his pick for the most impactful, which I found really interesting considering his role in the series.
When asked to pick the most shocking movie opening, Lillard immediately chose the murder scene at the beginning of *Scream*. He explained that killing off Drew Barrymore, who was a huge star at the time and featured prominently in the film’s marketing, was a bold move. Lillard believes this unexpected decision immediately signaled to the audience that anything could happen in the movie, setting the stage for the rest of the series.
The Original Ghostface Killer Picks Original Scream Kill as Franchise Best
Killing off the actress in the very first scene, after she’d been heavily featured in the movie’s promotion, would be a defining moment for the film – a clear signal of its willingness to break expectations and be truly original. Jamie Lillard explained, “I think that opening kill is incredibly effective because it immediately establishes that anyone can die, and that’s what I love about it.”
Someone in the audience playfully asked Matthew Lillard to describe how his character died in the *Scream* movies, and he had a fun reply. “Stu died! When did he die? I’m in the seventh one, man! What are you talking about?” he joked, hinting at his return for *Scream 7*. He then excitedly confirmed, “Does everyone know I’m doing *Scream 7*? I’m really excited about it.”
Although many fans recognize Lillard for his memorable performance as the unstable Stu in the *Scream* movies-and he was eager to reprise the role in *Scream 7*-his most popular character is actually Scooby-Doo. Lillard has voiced the perpetually hungry and easily frightened dog-owner since 2009, bringing the character to life in many projects after first playing him in the 2002 film *Scooby-Doo*, written by James Gunn.
Matthew Lillard said he admires how wholeheartedly Shaggy loves things. He explained that as he gets older, he finds himself loving people more and more, and he sees that same quality in the character of Shaggy.
Currently, filming is underway for *Scream 7*. Fans can continue enjoying the *Scream* movies on Paramount+, and Matthew Lillard’s character, Shaggy, appears in various *Scooby-Doo* adventures on Max.
