Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Announces New Anime

The Netflix original anime “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” provided a much-needed boost to the video game series by CD Projekt, following the somewhat rocky launch of the game “Cyberpunk 2077.” This anime rekindled interest in this universe and attracted many new players to the intense role-playing game. Interestingly, at this year’s Anime Expo, it was announced that “Edgerunners” will return with a new anime series, which could come as a surprise for fans of the original world. Although not all characters from the first anime survived, the universe created by Netflix, TRIGGER, and CD Projekt Red continues to thrive.

As an avid fan, I was thrilled to attend the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners panel, where screenwriter Bartosz Sztybor, Zach Aguilar (David’s voice actor), and Emi Lo (Lucy’s voice actor) shared their fond memories and how this dystopian anime has profoundly impacted their lives. The unexpected highlight was the appearance of Hiroki Imaishi, the director of Edgerunners at Studio TRIGGER, who discussed the acclaimed anime adaptation. In a jaw-dropping announcement, Edgerunners 2 was unveiled! Although the creators confirmed that David won’t be returning, this revelation is exciting news for fans eager to explore more of this captivating universe. It seemed like the panelists had plenty more to share about this upcoming sequel series, leaving us on the edge of our seats in anticipation!

Interestingly, writer Bartosz Sztybor shared that a major motivation behind crafting a fresh narrative stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the melancholic original conclusion. The upcoming series provides an opportunity for him to revisit this world. Conversely, Imaishi expressed reservations when approached by CD Projekt Red to re-enter this universe, feeling that all was adequately addressed in season one. However, there’s a figure within the company, as per Imaishi, capable of spearheading this new series – Kai Ikarashi, who has been appointed as the new director. Take a look at the initial poster below for more information.

Edgerunners’ Anime Impact

In addition to this news, the Netflix series “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” also announced some exciting details at this year’s Anime Expo. The dystopian series is set to break free from its streaming platform this fall with a physical Blu-Ray release on October 28th. Fans can start pre-ordering the new collection as early as August. This marks the first time that “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” will be available physically, allowing it to escape its “streaming imprisonment”. The package will come with a book of storyboards, a two year anniversary poster, and a cel-style sheet as exclusive bonuses.

In our initial assessment of the first run of the anime series titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”, we expressed our thoughts about why it deserved a perfect score of five out of five. We said, “Without a doubt, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ is an exceptional Netflix original anime that demands your focus and stands among the best productions the streaming platform has offered. Whether you’re a fan of the games or not, watching ‘Edgerunners’ is highly recommended.

Initially, it was believed that Edgerunners would only consist of a single season due to its final episode’s conclusion. The romantic relationship between David and Lucy took an ominous turn when David sacrificed himself to target Night City’s elite, but there was a complication. The enormous Atom Smasher annihilated David, even in his enhanced state, which sparked many Cyberpunk 2077 gamers to seek retribution in the game’s final act.
