From the very start of the Absolute Universe and its fresh take on some of DC’s most popular heroes, fans have been excited for the Absolute Justice League to arrive. There’s been discussion among readers about whether it was too early to bring the classic team together. The whole idea behind the Absolute Universe has been to challenge the heroes, and forming a fully organized team might reduce the tension. But you don’t need to worry about that – the Absolute Justice League is here, and it includes a significant surprise, continuing the trend of everything else in this universe. Just like everything else, it has a twist.
Staying true to the style of Absolute Universe, they’ve made a major change to the League – its members! The original Justice League is known as the universe’s strongest team of heroes, but this Absolute version is made up of the heroes’ greatest foes. They believe the defining characteristic of their universe is its flawed system, and therefore they must protect it *from* the heroes. With Darkseid, their god, supporting them, they’re convinced their cause is righteous.
A League Made for Evil
Across all the current Absolute comic book series, villains have generally fallen into two categories. The first type presents an immediate danger, a foe the heroes overcome within a few issues-examples include Bane, Clea, and Hal Jordan. The second type operates from the shadows, pulling the strings and acting as the larger, ongoing threat-essentially, the hero’s ultimate enemy. This includes villains like Ra’s al Ghul, the Joker, Veronica Cale, Hector Hammond, and Elenore Thawne. In a surprising turn of events, all of these villains gathered together in the Absolute Universe’s Hall of Justice to discuss the trouble they were all having with superheroes.
Historically, there have been heroes like the Sandman and Wildcat, but they were all eventually neutralized – either killed or controlled. This new generation of heroes, however, won’t fall into the same pattern. Cale proposed a united front, pooling their resources to remove the individuals disrupting their established order – people with significant power and influence within the system. Initially, there was disagreement and reluctance, but Cale revealed that Hawkman was secretly acting as an assassin for the government. Then, the Joker delivered a speech advocating for their unique, albeit warped, sense of justice.
In the end, everyone decided to work together. Meanwhile, Brainiac watched the meeting from his base in the Arctic, using Mirror Master to keep an eye on things. They talked about how the Justice League’s existence would help them both achieve their aims, but they realized they needed one more person. Cale kept Thawne under control, and Hammond, Ra’s, and Hawkman made sure each other didn’t go too far, but they still needed someone to handle Joker. After watching the main DC Universe with Mirror Master, Brainiac chose Lex Luthor. In this reality, Luthor is a family man and farmer who is happy with his life, but it’s obvious that’s all about to change.
The Heroes Without Justice and a League
The fact that the villains have formed the Absolute Justice League is a shocking turn of events, placing the newly established superhero community in significant peril. Initially, the most apparent threat is the sheer physical danger these villains represent when they collaborate. Previously, each hero faced immense difficulty battling these foes individually, often reaching their limits. However, with their combined powers and resources, they could become an overwhelming force. Although the Justice League traditionally represents hope for the world, this universe is grim and unforgiving, and the League’s transformation mirrors that darkness.
In the Absolute Universe, Hope is designed to be the weaker side. Typically, the Justice League represents the strongest alliance of heroes, demonstrating their ability to unite and protect the world. However, in this universe, that support and power have been taken away and given to their enemies. The Justice League usually triumphs, but with the villains now in charge, this new team intends to completely destroy any remaining hope in this world through sheer force.
Actually, this development might be deliberately leading the heroes towards defeat. While they consistently triumph in the main storyline, particularly when they initially unite, this significant shift suggests a possible loss. The Absolute Universe is designed to push the heroes to their limits, demanding more effort than ever before to overcome challenges. Therefore, a disastrous first team battle could seamlessly transition us into the next year of Absolute books. It would mark a change in their roles, evolving from individuals fighting personal battles to soldiers engaged in a much larger war.
I know things look bleak, and honestly, they’ll probably lose sometimes, even feel completely lost. They might not even gain anything tangible except knowing others are still fighting alongside them, but that could be enough to keep going. Our heroes aren’t going to achieve a simple victory, but they won’t be defeated either. This will be the beginning of something much larger, a real chance to finally change the world for the better. It’s going to get tougher, things will get darker, but that just means we’re getting closer to a brighter future, to the dawn. Hope remains!
