Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker who has won an Oscar, has long hoped to bring a particular movie to life. The project was officially announced in 2023, and it will finally be released in November. Before that, it will have its first public showing at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival late this summer.
Before the movie comes to select theaters and then Netflix, the streaming service has revealed the first official image of the Creature with a new poster. The horror film boasts a famous cast, including Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi. Elordi plays the Creature in this fresh adaptation of Mary Shelley’s famous horror story. It’s a new take on a classic!
The official poster hints at Guillermo del Toro’s long-held vision for the creature, and reveals how they transformed the Euphoria star into someone completely different. While the two-minute trailer doesn’t offer much of a look at Elordi as the Creature, the few glimpses we see show the actor is virtually unrecognizable.
The highly praised director hinted at his latest project. Del Toro clarified that viewers won’t be simply “terrified” by Elordi’s portrayal of “the Creature.” He also described Elordi as “staggeringly beautiful,” but with a distinctly “otherworldly” quality. He explained that he specifically didn’t want the character to appear like someone who had been badly injured and poorly reconstructed.
Much like his long-held ambition to create an adaptation of Frankenstein, del Toro explained, “If [Victor] has spent his life imagining this creature, he’ll get it right. It would appear as a newly born, pale, almost white being. The scars wouldn’t be flaws, but rather beautiful and streamlined.”
Beyond being a project he’s long cared about, this adaptation also holds deep personal meaning for del Toro. The director shared that Frankenstein was a significant inspiration, and he was able to get his father to discuss the harrowing experience of being kidnapped in 1998. This conversation ultimately inspired him to make the film.
Frankenstein Had an Encouraging Reception
Frankenstein premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 30th and quickly earned a “Certified Fresh” rating. After its initial release, more reviews came in, boosting its score to an impressive 80% and maintaining the “Certified Fresh” badge. Currently, an audience score isn’t available as the film hasn’t been released in cinemas yet. Frankenstein features performances by Mia Goth, Charles Dance, and Lars Mikkelsen.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is among the films Netflix is releasing with the hope of earning Oscar nominations. It will be shown in theaters for a limited time alongside the new movie from Noah Baumbach, and the third Knives Out installment, titled Wake Up Dead Man, directed by Rian Johnson. All three films will have a small theatrical run before becoming available on Netflix a few weeks later.
Frankenstein has a limited theatrical release on Oct. 17, before coming to Netflix on Nov. 7.
