Tom Cruise’s upcoming blockbuster, “Deeper,” has encountered a temporary setback. Originally scheduled to co-star Ana de Armas, Cruise would portray a former astronaut who stumbles upon an enigmatic power during a deep-sea exploration mission. However, the movie has been paused due to budgetary concerns, according to Puck. The film is now being marketed by Cruise himself to other studios, as Warner Bros. allegedly refused to produce it with its estimated $300 million cost.
For quite some time now, “Deeper” has been undergoing development, with various actors and directors linked at different points. Before Tom Cruise came on board, Idris Elba and Bradley Cooper were rumored to be associated with the project. Earlier, Kornél Mundruczó and Baltasar Kormákur were attached to the film, with Mundruczó initially slated to direct Cooper in the movie, later followed by Kormákur taking up the directorial responsibilities for Elba’s role. The original script was penned by screenwriter Max Landis, with revisions reportedly undertaken by Christopher McQuarrie.
Under David Zaslav’s leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery, there has been a review of the studio’s film projects following disappointing box office performances in the past. This assessment has led to stricter budgets and some productions being halted or moved elsewhere. Given the reported $275 million production cost for the movie “Deeper”, it’s no surprise that the project is on hold, considering this figure doesn’t include marketing expenses. However, Tom Cruise remains one of Hollywood’s last major stars and played a crucial role in the success of Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.49 billion globally. He has also contributed to the box office prowess of the Mission: Impossible series. Nevertheless, while Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hasn’t been a massive hit at the box office, it is said to have had an expensive production budget that could potentially prevent it from making a profit.
Apparently, Cruise is considering offering the project for other film studios, yet he appears to be firmly involved in “Deeper” together with Doug Liman, a collaborator from their previous work on “Edge of Tomorrow”. It’s uncertain if Armas will continue her involvement if the movie changes studios, as this could delay production until it secures a new studio.
Of course, Armas is currently riding the wave of the release of the Ballerina, a spin-off from the popular film series John Wick. This movie has garnered positive reviews with a 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s only managed to earn $106 million at the global box office so far. Although this exceeds the first John Wick‘s worldwide gross of $86 million, it falls significantly short of the $447 million total of John Wick 4. Given a reported production budget of $275 million, Warner Bros. Discovery was likely concerned about the uncertainty surrounding whether or not Cruise and Armas could generate enough profit from an original thriller to cover their investment.
While an official release date for the film “Deeper” hasn’t been set, speculation pointed towards its premiere either towards the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027. However, with reports indicating that the movie is now being marketed to potential buyers, it remains uncertain if and when it will actually be shown in theaters.
