Jimmy Kimmel Live! is back to a regular schedule after host Jimmy Kimmel was briefly suspended by ABC because of something he said on the show. He and fellow late-night host Stephen Colbert, who has also faced challenges, showed their friendship by appearing as guests on each other’s programs. During an interview on Late Night, Kimmel explained in detail what happened the day he was suspended, and even shared a sweet story about how one of his children reacted. (His other child’s reaction wasn’t quite as heartwarming.)
According to his account, ABC’s decision came at the worst possible moment – just as guests were traveling to the studio, and the seats were full of excited audience members. Because of this, everyone had to be evacuated, and Kimmel & Co. had to leave quickly. He adds that being followed home by two helicopters certainly didn’t ease anyone’s anxiety.
This is when Kimmel had a chance to talk to his children about what was happening, and it was incredibly sweet. Here’s what he shared, along with how Colbert responded.
- KIMMEL: We get to the house, and we’re shaking. The kids are up. I got two kids. And our daughter, who’s 11 years old, says, ‘I can sell my Labubus.’ It was actually very sweet.
- COLBERT: Oh, that’s lovely.
I think that comment would have been incredibly upsetting, reducing me to tears, particularly because I was right in the middle of everything and didn’t know what would happen next. At the time, Kimmel hadn’t yet received the overwhelming support from other celebrities and late-night show hosts, so he was understandably very emotional.
That’s exactly when a child’s truly kind words have the biggest impact. I remember when I was struggling financially, my daughter offered to set up a lemonade stand to help, and seeing her empathy meant everything to me. It was a really touching moment and showed how much she cared.
Also, Labubus figures are incredibly expensive, and they can fetch very high prices when resold. This means Jimmy Kimmel’s daughter could likely have paid off her mortgage and taken a family vacation simply by selling these valuable collectibles. (It’s a bit of an exaggeration, but even South Park made fun of how costly the toys are.)
Jimmy Kimmel’s son reacted to the news a little differently than his sister, and though it was amusing, it didn’t move me to tears as much.
- KIMMEL: Our son just got naked and started running around the house.
- COLBERT: Also lovely.
Considering how upset he was when his father was suspended, I have no idea what his reaction was when he found out the talk show was resuming production.
Jimmy Kimmel made a strong return after his suspension, captivating viewers with a sincere opening monologue. While ratings predictably decreased afterward, that initial episode achieved some of the highest numbers in the show’s history. Therefore, Kimmel doesn’t need to worry about selling his children’s toys just yet. However, what the future holds remains uncertain. It’s a constantly evolving landscape. But for now, he’s doing okay. The numbers speak for themselves.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Show will keep airing their current seasons on ABC and CBS, respectively, weeknights (except Fridays) beginning at 11:35 p.m. Eastern Time, as part of the 2025 TV schedule.
