This evening’s episode of WWE SmackDown primarily revolved around the lead-up to Evolution 2, as two matches were confirmed for the event, while others were hinted at or advanced in some way. However, one match stands out, as its victor now has a chance to challenge for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. This is significant on its own, but it carries even more weight because this team appears to be a genuine contender for those titles and should undoubtedly secure them when Evolution 2 takes place.
What Went Down
The individuals under discussion are Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair, who have had frequent exchanges over the past few weeks. Admittedly, these encounters weren’t initially friendly, but the dynamic changed slightly when Bliss emerged victorious against Flair in the Night of Champions tournament. They’ve kept running into each other, even off-camera, which culminated in tonight’s SmackDown and a significant chat with Nick Aldis.
Aldis proposed that Flair team up with Bliss to challenge for the Women’s Tag Team Championships, an idea which eventually won Flair over. They began their quest to defeat Michin, B-Fab, and Chelsea Green’s Secret Service consisting of Piper Niven and Alba Fyre, aiming to claim those titles at Evolution 2. As the match progressed, there were some bumpy instances, but Flair and Bliss gradually found a rhythm together. However, eventually, Flair’s ego took over.
In simpler terms, Bliss was pushed off the ring by Bliss from a high position, setting up for Flair to perform a somersault maneuver (moonsault) on both opponents. Before executing this move, Flair made a mocking gesture towards Bliss. Afterwards, she repeated the taunt. However, just after performing the moonsault, Flair had to leave the center of the ring to address Green, who was standing on the edge of the ring and arguing with both Flair and the referee.
In the ring, Flair delivered a powerful kick to an opponent, seemingly knocking her out. Yet, as this happened, it became clear that Flair had tagged Bliss by patting her head earlier. This meant Bliss was now in action for their team. As Flair reveled in the crowd’s adoration at the ropes, Bliss executed a Twisted Bliss maneuver on both opponents and pinned Fyre to secure the victory, with Flair watching from the sidelines. Initially showing frustration, Flair then rushed to embrace Bliss, but the hug was quick, as she soon stepped back.
Why They Should Win
At Evolution 2, Bliss and Flair will be the initial contenders facing off against Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. Additionally, there will be two other teams participating in the match, one from Monday Night Raw and one from NXT. As of now, the identities of these teams are still unknown, but given their skills and past performances, Bliss and Flair are strong candidates for the title. In my opinion, they stand out as the most likely winners.
Within just a few weeks, WWE transformed what was initially a minor backstage storyline into one of the program’s most intriguing narratives. The audience had been eagerly anticipating a significant storyline for Bliss and more screen time, and a Women’s Tag Team Titles run would be an ideal way to fulfill that demand across all three brands. This move has not been maximized by WWE over the past year, but it offers Bliss increased visibility on various shows. Moreover, this arrangement benefits Flair significantly as well.
Following her grand comeback at the Royal Rumble, Flair’s journey since then has been quite the rollercoaster. While there were some brilliant highlights, the rivalry with Tiffany Stratton had its ups and downs, and it seems premature to revisit that feud. Instead, partnering with Bliss presents a refreshing twist for Flair, and it offers her an opportunity to earn more fan support as a sincere babyface over time. If this partnership endures, it could also set the stage for Flair to become an even more formidable antagonist should she choose to betray Bliss. Regardless of which path she chooses, this team-up and narrative holds potential benefits for her character development.

Another significant factor is the unpredictable aspect of injuries and the necessity to adjust quickly. The Women’s Tag Team Titles have been integral to the broader Judgement Day narrative and were held by Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. When they regained the Titles from Becky Lynch and Lyra Valkyria, it was assumed they would keep them for some time, but due to Morgan’s injury, adjustments in plans became necessary. This development eventually led to the announcement that Roxanne Perez would become the new Tag Team Champion, teaming up with Rodriguez. However, they were forced to defend their Titles at Evolution because of this change.
It’s certainly feasible and intriguing to keep characters like Perez and Rodriguez in the narrative, especially as Perez strengthens her connections within the group. However, the plot could progress even if they don’t hold titles, possibly by having them lose their titles in an engaging manner. This could all build up to Morgan’s return, providing a satisfying payoff for the audience.
Having two heavyweights like Bliss and Flair contending for the Titles is significant, and if WWE fully utilizes the potential these Titles possess, it could mark a fantastic period and the dawn of an exciting new chapter for these Championships. Moreover, the inevitable showdown between Bliss and Flair looms large, and if given ample opportunity, their rivalry would undoubtedly be captivating. Here are my arguments, and while we anticipate whether they’ll claim the Titles, you can view the updated Evolution 2 card below.
