The ‘90s delivered a fantastic era of films for kids, ranging from animated favorites like The Lion King and Toy Story to live-action hits such as Home Alone and The Sandlot. Even now, years after children gathered around their TVs to watch these movies on VHS, many of them are still cherished by viewers of all ages as they become available on streaming services. With movies constantly being added and removed from these platforms, a particularly memorable ‘90s film is currently available on Netflix, making it a great choice for a Halloween watch.
Starting October 1st, you can now watch Brad Silberling’s popular 1995 film Casper on Netflix. The movie is based on the Harvey Comics character Casper the Friendly Ghost and tells the story of Casper, voiced by Malachi Pearson, a kind ghost who lives in Whipstaff Manor and wishes he could make a friend, but usually ends up frightening everyone. Everything changes when a teenage girl named Kat and her father, a therapist who studies paranormal activity, move in. The film, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary, features Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and Eric Idle. The voice cast includes performances by Joe Nipote, Joe Alaskey, and Brad Garrett.
Why You Should Watch Casper
Casper is a wonderful Halloween movie for the whole family, enjoyable for viewers of all ages, and October is the ideal time to watch it again. While it has spooky elements like haunted houses and ghosts, it keeps things light and appropriate for younger audiences with a PG rating. But Casper offers much more than just scares. At its heart, it’s a touching story about friendship and dealing with loss, as Kat and her father cope with their grief and Casper struggles with being a ghost, his sad history, and his desire for companionship. The special, sweet bond that develops between Kat and Casper, rooted in their shared experiences of loss, gives the movie emotional resonance and makes it truly memorable.
Casper is currently available on Netflix as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. Even after three decades, the movie remains a cherished favorite for many who grew up with it and is a memorable part of 90s pop culture. It continues to delight audiences with its heartwarming story and lovable characters, and the groundbreaking visual effects used to create Casper and his ghostly companions were impressively done and still look good today.
Other Family-Friendly Movies Now on Netflix
Casper isn’t the only new, family-friendly content coming to Netflix this October. Both Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax and The Goonies became available on October 1st. More titles for families will be added throughout the month, such as Dr. Seuss’s Horton! on October 6th, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies on October 17th.
Netflix’s streaming service also offers plenty of spooky movies and shows, like A Tale Dark & Grimm, Gnome Alone, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting, and Nightbooks.
