A well-loved fighting game originally released in 2005, and only available on PlayStation 2, is getting a new version in the coming months. Over the years, many fighting games have been created exclusively for PlayStation consoles. Street Fighter V, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, Tekken 3, and the forthcoming Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls are just a few examples of fighting games that have only been playable on various PlayStation systems. Now, a game from the PS2 era is finally getting a new release, allowing players to enjoy it on more than just its original console.
PlayStation recently announced that SoulCalibur 3 is getting a new release on both PS5 and PS4. Originally launched in October 2005, the third main game in the SoulCalibur series was only available on the PlayStation 2. A slightly different version of SoulCalibur 3 did appear in arcades in 2006, but this PS2 version remains the only one ever released for home consoles or PC. Currently, there aren’t many details about when this SoulCalibur 3 port will be available on PS5 and PS4, however PlayStation has stated it will be released sometime before the end of 2025. Furthermore, it will be added to the PlayStation Plus Classics library when it launches.
This PS2 Exclusivity Is a Bit of an Oddity
SoulCalibur 3 stands out because it’s the only core game in the series that was only released on one system – the PlayStation 2. While the first SoulCalibur began as a Sega Dreamcast exclusive, it was later made available on the Xbox 360 after ten years. Following that, SoulCalibur 2, SoulCalibur 4, and SoulCalibur 5 were all released on multiple consoles during their respective generations.
Why was SoulCalibur 3 only available on the PS2? The most probable reason is that Sony paid a significant amount of money to secure exclusivity. It’s likely they reached an agreement with Namco, the game’s publisher, to prevent SoulCalibur 3 from being released on other platforms, and that agreement has held for two decades. This is why PlayStation can now re-release SoulCalibur 3 on PS5 and PS4, finally making it available to a whole new generation of players.
