While France and Spain are popular travel spots known for their culture, food, and sights, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon portrays them as post-apocalyptic ruins. However, survivors would actually prefer to endure the apocalypse in France and Spain rather than in the scorching heat of Georgia, even with the unique walkers found in Europe. Similar to the original Walking Dead series, fans can visit many of the filming locations from Daryl Dixon and imagine themselves living through the apocalypse.

Daryl Dixon boasts stunning visuals and set designs – exactly what you’d hope for from a post-apocalyptic show filmed in France and Spain. A key to this is the show’s commitment to shooting on location. Thankfully, iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre remained untouched, thanks to the clever use of CGI. This was all made possible by the warm reception from France and Spain, and by casting local actors to authentically portray their cultures and traditions.

The French and American Locations of Daryl Dixon Seasons 1 and 2

Most of the story unfolds in France, beginning when the main character is shipwrecked on a shore and cared for by nuns. It’s there he meets Isabelle, who will become his love interest, and she asks him to accompany her and her nephew, Laurent, on a journey across France to reach another community. Before arriving in Paris, Daryl finds himself traveling through the French countryside. These scenes were primarily filmed in Provence, a region in southeastern France bordering Italy and the Mediterranean Sea. After a lengthy and solitary search for meaning, Isabelle brings Daryl to the Abbey of Saint Bernadette, where her convent and Laurent are located. The Abbaye de Montmajour in Arles, Provence, served as the filming location representing the Abbey. It’s a beautiful place!

The destination Daryl’s group is heading for is Mont-Saint-Michel, a unique island village located in Normandy, France. While it’s a popular tourist spot, the show was permitted to film there to showcase its historical significance for the remaining French people. Mont-Saint-Michel wasn’t the only interesting location Daryl Dixon explored during filming. The series also filmed at the Louvre Museum and the Paris Catacombs. Apparently, securing permission to film at the Louvre required booking it far in advance-reportedly up to a year! Other notable French filming locations for Daryl Dixon include the Grands Boulevards area and the PanthĂ©on monument in Paris, Omaha Beach in Normandy, the Pont du Gard in Occitanie, and Bouches-du-RhĂŽne in Provence.

For certain scenes, the sets were completely rebuilt or different international locations were used to represent various settings. For example, The Demimonde, an underground nightclub featured on the show and accessed through the Catacombs, was constructed at Les Studios de Paris. Although the story indicates scenes take place in Maine, America during Seasons 1 and 2, they were actually filmed just outside of Paris. Similarly, the scenes set in Greenland were shot in the French Alps.

Where Daryl Dixon Filmed in Spain for Season 3 (and Now Season 4)

Season 3 follows Daryl and Carol as they venture into a fresh setting, though it remains relatively close to France. The season begins with the pair traveling through a deserted England, where they encounter Julian, the sole survivor. While Daryl Dixon gives the impression that the show is filmed in a post-apocalyptic England, much of what you see is created using computer-generated imagery. The actors primarily filmed in Spain, recreating the look of England, though the crew did capture some real footage in Seven Sisters, East Sussex, and along the River Thames.

Okay, so I was totally shocked when Daryl, Carol, and Julian’s boat trip to Maine went horribly wrong! They didn’t even get close – a storm wrecked their ship and washed them up on the coast of Spain. It was heartbreaking, and sadly, Julian didn’t make it. It’s awful! Daryl and Carol ended up basically forcing a young couple to drive them to their home, which is this place called Solaz del Mar. It’s so cool that the village was actually filmed in SepĂșlveda, Segovia, and the locals even got to be extras! How neat is that? Apparently, the show used a ton of different locations in Spain for Season 3 – Madrid, Galicia, AragĂłn, Catalonia, and Valencia were all featured. And get this – I read that parts of Episode 5 were filmed in the same areas used for those old spaghetti Westerns! I’m especially excited to see if the Tabernas Desert shots from the trailer are connected to that!

Filming for Season 4 is happening now, and is expected to be released in 2026, continuing the pattern of each season being filmed and shown one after the other. Like Season 3, the beautiful locations of Madrid, Galicia, and Segovia will again be used as the backdrop for the survivors’ struggle against both walkers and other people, with extra filming also taking place in Bilbao, Andalucía, and Toledo. There’s a possibility of some filming returning to America, but this depends on whether Daryl and Carol make it back home this time.
