What Is a Boon In Netflix’s Sandman Season 2?
As the conclusion of Volume 1 of The Sandman Season 2 approaches, the concept of a boon plays a crucial role in the unfolding narrative.
The popular streaming drama transports fans over 300 years back, narrating the series of events that caused Dream to drift away from his son, Orpheus, who possesses oracular abilities. The term ‘Boon’ is recurrently used throughout the series, and it significantly connects with the contemporary storyline in subsequent episodes as well.
In simpler terms, while the Oxford Dictionary describes a boon as a “prayer, petition, or request,” in Greek mythology, it signifies a favor granted by a god to another entity.
As a cinephile delving into the realm of ancient Greek tales, I’ve found that these divine gifts – bestowed by one deity upon another – are often laden with strings attached, leading to the dramatic twists and turns we’ve come to associate with these timeless myths.
In Episode 5, they show the faithful retelling of the mythical story of Orpheus and his beloved wife Eurydice. During this recollection, it’s revealed that Eurydice was fatally bitten by a snake on their very own wedding day.
When Orpheus implores his father to allow him to sacrifice his own life for hers instead, Dream (also known as Morpheus), regretfully declines. This decision creates a deep chasm in their relationship that endures for countless centuries.
Moved by a deep longing, I find myself taking control of my destiny, seeking divine intervention from The Endless. With the gift of immortality bestowed upon me, I bravely venture into the chilling Underworld, determined to negotiate with the fearsome Hades, hoping for a miracle.
In the realm of the deceased, Orpheus negotiates an agreement with Hades, the ruler of the underworld, or is granted a favor by this overseer. Hades informs the immortal youth that he can reclaim Eurydice if he avoids speaking to or glancing at her as they exit.
As they approach, the duo nearly reaches the boundary of the mystical plane, but Orpheus cannot resist peeking over his shoulder to verify if his fiancée is still following, thereby violating the agreement with Hades and dooming his love to an endless existence in the Underworld.
In the course of the series, Orpheus encounters his father again, and since he is indebted to Orpheus for sparing him from separation with Eurydice in the past, Dream finds himself compelled to grant one last favor to his son.
In my tale, I humbly ask Death itself, personified as Dream, for the ultimate release – the end of my earthly existence. Graciously, he grants my plea, and in doing so, ushers me towards the Underworld once more, a journey that feels more permanent this time around.
