James Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 2 successfully builds on the popular first season, continuing the story of Peacemaker, the flawed hero portrayed by John Cena. This season, Peacemaker finds himself in what appears to be a perfect world where he’s a celebrated superhero alongside his family. But episode 6 confirms what many viewers suspected: this idyllic place is actually the notorious Earth-10, also known as Earth-X, a reality where the Nazis won World War II and control the globe. At the heart of Earth-X lies a frequently overlooked team of DC superheroes: the Freedom Fighters. DC Comics hasn’t given this team of patriotic heroes, who are dedicated to battling fascism, the recognition they deserve. Given the current global climate, it’s time the Freedom Fighters made a comeback.
The heroes who form the Freedom Fighters first appeared as separate superheroes, originally published by Quality Comics in the early 1940s. The official Freedom Fighters team wasn’t created until DC Comics bought the rights to the characters in the 1970s. The core team consists of Uncle Sam, the Ray, Human Bomb, Phantom Lady, Black Condor, Doll Man, and Doll Woman. Each member has unique abilities: the Ray can fly and shoot energy; Human Bomb is essentially a walking nuclear explosion; Phantom Lady can teleport and control shadows; Black Condor flies with metal wings; and Doll Man and Doll Woman can become incredibly small. The Freedom Fighters were first presented as Earth-X’s final defense after the Nazis conquered the world.
Although a version of the team appears in the primary DC Universe timeline, they’re mostly seen as World War II heroes or as minor characters. Even the Earth-X Freedom Fighters haven’t had a significant role since their excellent, but overlooked, mini-series in 2019. This limited use of the superhero team is a considerable mistake by DC Comics. The team members aren’t only incredibly powerful, but their struggle for liberty against a deeply rooted, oppressive political system also provides endless opportunities to explore themes of resistance to injustice – a topic that’s particularly relevant to what’s happening in the United States and around the world today.
The Freedom Fighters are a Symbol of America’s Core Values
From heroes like Superman to Captain America, many superheroes embody the ideals of America. The Freedom Fighters share this same spirit, but haven’t received the recognition they deserve compared to DC’s more well-known characters. In reality, the Freedom Fighters are among the strongest examples of American values within the entire DC Comics universe.
The Freedom Fighters aren’t simply a team of patriotic heroes; they embody the core principles of equality and self-determination for everyone. In 2014, DC Comics’ Multiversity series reimagined the Earth-X Freedom Fighters, giving their fight for freedom deeper significance. This new version of the team is made up of individuals representing various minority groups specifically targeted by the Nazis. Ray is gay, Black Condor is African American, Doll Man and Doll Woman are Jehovah’s Witnesses, Phantom Lady is Romani, and the Human Bomb is Jewish. These heroes are fighting for their very existence, and they serve as representatives of communities that have faced centuries of unfair persecution – especially under the oppressive fascist regime of Earth-X. They are protectors of their communities and a symbol of America’s diverse population.
Probably the Freedom Fighter who best represents American values is their leader, Uncle Sam. This hero isn’t simply someone wearing a costume of the famous American symbol. In DC Comics, Uncle Sam is actually the spirit of America brought to life. The more people believe in American ideals like truth, justice, and freedom, the more powerful he becomes. He has abilities like incredible strength, eternal life, and the power to change his size. Uncle Sam has been fighting for freedom since the Revolutionary War and has started almost every version of the Freedom Fighters. He embodies the strength of the American Dream and reminds us to always oppose fascism and prejudice. He shows up whenever America needs him most, and that time is now.
The World Needs the Freedom Fighters Now More Than Ever
Considering what’s happening globally and in American politics today, DC Comics has a great chance to use the Freedom Fighters to explore complicated and important discussions about patriotism and fascism. We’re seeing a worrying rise in authoritarianism around the world, including here at home. Ideas rooted in fascism and prejudice have infiltrated the highest levels of American government, putting democracy at risk. Hate crimes against minority groups are happening more often, and Americans are more divided than they’ve been in decades. Many well-known patriotic heroes, like Superman and Captain America, already address issues like these in their stories, showing both the good and bad sides of America. The Freedom Fighters should do the same.
DC constrained the Freedom Fighters to battling only the typical portrayal of German Nazis. This overlooks the opportunity for these heroes to provide insights into fighting fascism that arises within our own country. The Freedom Fighters should be champions of the people, dedicated to protecting minority groups and upholding core American rights. The varied backgrounds of these heroes could reflect the challenges faced by all Americans, and also offer encouragement to their communities.
Additionally, Uncle Sam, as an embodiment of the American spirit, provides a compelling way to examine the range of patriotic feelings and how those feelings can unfortunately turn into support for authoritarian rule. Uncle Sam might be deeply saddened by how aspects of America and its government have adopted beliefs he historically opposed. The Freedom Fighters can also represent the importance of citizens striving to improve America for all and safeguarding the strength of our democracy.
With only two episodes left in the season, it’s doubtful the Peacemaker series will feature the Freedom Fighters, as the show is mainly concentrating on the problems the main characters are dealing with. However, that doesn’t mean DC Comics shouldn’t consider bringing the Freedom Fighters back and giving them their own dedicated storylines. DC could reintroduce the team in a couple of ways. They could create a new, contemporary version of the Freedom Fighters that exists within the main DC universe. Alternatively, they could bring back the original Earth-X team. Regardless of the approach, considering how divided America currently is, the Freedom Fighters would be a perfect team to rally the country around a common cause – the fight for democracy.
