Captain America, one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, has become a common name due to his appearances in the MCU. Yet, his comic book adventures have had their share of challenges. However, things seem to be improving for Cap, as Marvel is bringing on writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Valerio Schiti for a brand-new Captain America series. Known for crafting exceptional tales, Zdarsky’s work on Spider-Man and Daredevil has left readers spellbound. Similarly, Schiti has been among Marvel’s top artists, having worked on major events like Inferno and A.X.E. Judgment Day. The combination of these two talents promises a unique and exceptional Captain America series.
Zdarksy and Schiti’s run on “Captain America” is a “year one” type narrative, transporting readers back to the period immediately following the Avengers’ discovery of Captain America frozen in ice. This storyline finds Cap re-entering the U.S. Armed Forces and receiving his inaugural mission, which sends him to Latveria. In pursuit of information regarding Latveria, Captain America seeks out the individual most knowledgeable about Doctor Doom – Reed Richards. During their intriguing dialogue, Richards confesses something to Cap that aligns perfectly with reality – Reed has been an ardent admirer of Captain America all along.
Reed Richards Learned to Love Cap From His Father
It’s not surprising that Reed Richards admires Captain America, given his lifelong love for books and intellect. After all, his familiarity with Steve Rogers’ time as Captain America is perfectly logical. Reed shares that he inherited his appreciation for Captain America from his father, who was also a devoted fan of the superhero. In fact, Reed reveals one of his most cherished items – a Captain America action figure – which he has kept since then and even brought to show Cap himself. This heartwarming moment of a dedicated nerd meeting his hero is a wonderful touch for Reed’s character, particularly considering his earlier portrayal in the Silver Age comics, where his personality was influenced by his relatively advanced age at the time.
In earlier stories, Reed Richards was depicted as a soldier in the Korean War, serving alongside Ben Grimm (The Thing). This would place Reed in his late 30s, meaning he grew up watching newsreels of Captain America’s World War II exploits. However, this backstory seems to have been adjusted over time, likely due to the aging of the characters if they were to participate in any wars. The latest volume of ‘Captain America’ is set in the 21st century, suggesting that Cap was discovered in ice around the late 2000s or early 2010s. This implies that Reed, born in the 80s, would have had his father as the one who watched Cap’s wartime adventures on newsreels, passing down his love for comics to Reed. Many find Marvel’s sliding timescale confusing, but moments like this, showing the evolution of characters and their fandoms, make it intriguing.
Reed’s Love of Captain America Explains a Lot About Him
In simple terms, Reed Richards, who was around 30 or so during the early 2010s, deeply admired Captain America. His admiration stemmed from how Captain America stood tall against the “scary monsters” of his time – a symbol of courage in the midst of global fear over nuclear war (a fear that was rampant during Reed’s childhood in the ’80s). This courage inspired Reed to be brave as well, and this influence played a significant role in Reed’s life, culminating on the Marvel Universe.
It’s quite fitting that Reed Richards, a fan of Captain America, given his life experiences that have evolved over the years. Some readers might not appreciate the shifting timeline due to its impact on characters, but I personally find it more relatable since it allows me to connect with this version of Reed and find comfort amidst destruction through superheroes. It’s a delightful scene in an outstanding comic (grab Captain America #1 immediately – trust me, it’s worth your investment).
