While Digimon was most popular in the 90s, you might think it’s now a somewhat niche franchise. However, that’s not the case! The new game, Digimon Story Time Stranger, is becoming incredibly popular.
Okay, so we still have a ways to go before we know everything, but as a fan, I’ve been checking, and it’s awesome to see that the game hit over 70k concurrent players on Steam! It’s really exciting to see so many people playing. That’s a great sign, and I’m hoping it keeps growing!
As a fan, I always check how many other people are playing a game – the concurrent players. It’s not a direct measure of sales, of course, but usually, the more people playing at the same time, the more copies the game has probably sold. It’s just a good sign that a lot of people are enjoying it, in my opinion!
In fact, if you compare to previous Digimon games, the difference is dramatic.
For instance, Digimon Survive – though it’s true that it belongs to a separate branch of the series – reached a high of just over 6,000 players.
Interestingly, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth – Time Stranger’s previous game, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, only reached a peak of around 3,500 players. However, it’s worth noting that version was released on PC several years after it initially came out on PlayStation.
We don’t have exact player numbers for the PS5 version, but on the US PS Store, the game is currently seventh in digital sales. It’s only behind popular titles like Ghost of Yotei, Fortnite, NBA 2K26, and Madden NFL 26. Interestingly, it’s selling better than Roblox and Battlefield 6!
If everything is progressing as expected, we anticipate that Bandai Namco will soon publish a report on their sales figures.
It’s a shame, then, that the game didn’t quite hit our reviewer’s expectations.
In our 6/10 verdict, we said the game “squanders so much potential”:
Digimon Story Time Stranger had the potential to be one of the best Digimon games if it had simply let its excellent RPG mechanics shine. However, it’s held back by a surprisingly straightforward design, which restricts both battles and how your team develops. Even though it’s full of promise, Time Stranger ultimately feels like a disappointing missed opportunity.
