The Avengers frequently find themselves in competition. During battles, Thor and Hulk often try to outdo each other in terms of causing destruction, and their rivalry can sometimes escalate into physical fights. At the same time, Captain America and Iron Man are constantly debating, each convinced they know the best course of action not just for the team, but for the world as a whole. This disagreement ultimately leads to a physical confrontation in Captain America: Civil War when it becomes clear that words aren’t enough. Hawkeye and Black Widow are the exception, maintaining a good relationship due to their close friendship.
While Earth’s Mightiest Heroes might not be aware, the Marvel Cinematic Universe often creates competition between them in various ways. This includes box office success for individual movies, and the sheer number of projects each character appears in. But just as important is the time and resources the franchise dedicates to designing a hero’s costume. Here’s a ranking of every original Avenger, based on their MCU outfits.
6) Black Widow
Choosing a favorite Black Widow costume is tough because they’re all pretty similar. As a spy, Natasha Romanoff usually wears black clothing with small, unique touches. The white suit she has in Black Widow is a welcome departure, but the rest of her outfits aren’t particularly memorable.
5) Hawkeye
Clint Barton, much like his friend, often changes his look. Throughout most of his appearances in the MCU, Hawkeye typically wears a black costume, sometimes with purple accents to reflect his comic book origins. What sets his wardrobe apart from Black Widow’s is the Ronin suit he uses at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame during his period of vigilantism, and also the half-purple outfit he sports in his Disney+ series.
4) Hulk
It’s probably safe to say Hulk is near the bottom of this list, mainly because his typical outfit is just torn pants. Anything decent can’t stay on him for long, considering how much bigger he is than Bruce Banner. Still, his gladiator costume in Thor: Ragnarok is really impressive, boosting his ranking a bit. Plus, he also gets credit for the suit Smart Hulk wears in Endgame, which is a pretty good look.
3) Thor
Thor’s early costumes weren’t very impressive, to put it mildly. But, similar to the Hulk, he receives a significant makeover in Ragnarok and consistently sports fantastic looks afterward. The gladiator outfit from that film, the armor in Avengers: Infinity War, and even the costume featured in Thor: Love and Thunder (excluding the rather silly helmet) are all standouts in the MCU.
2) Captain America
Setting aside the deliberately over-the-top outfit from The Avengers, Captain America consistently wears excellent costumes in the MCU. The stealth suit from Captain America: The Winter Soldier is particularly well-designed, and it even makes a return appearance in Endgame. That film also showcases the scaled costume, which is arguably the best live-action costume of all time. The main criticism of Cap’s wardrobe is that his outfits don’t vary much, especially when compared to the next character on this list. Also, a few of his helmet designs weren’t the most flattering.
1) Iron Man
No Avenger changes outfits more often than Iron Man. In each film, he utilizes at least one new suit of armor, and these are usually improvements on what he’s worn before. He has so many different looks that some of the best ones, like the Mark 42, don’t get as much screen time as they should. Without the House Party Protocol, Iron Man likely would have easily won and made the competition pointless.
I’m really curious – who do *you* think has the coolest costume in the MCU? Seriously, let me know in the comments below and join the conversation now in the ComicBook Forum! I can’t wait to see what everyone thinks!
