Fans are finally getting a new take on Transformers for Skybound Entertainment, and it’s something they’ve been hoping for. Robert Kirkman, the creative force behind popular series like The Walking Dead and Invincible, is now heavily involved, and he has big plans for both the heroic Autobots and the villainous Decepticons, starting right away.
Skybound Entertainment, led by Robert Kirkman, is now in charge of the expanding comic book series created by Jorge Corona (artist) and Daniel Warren Johnson (writer). This series exists within the same universe as the classic animated show, G.I. Joe. As Corona and Johnson prepare to hand over creative control to Kirkman, the stories in the Energon Universe are expected to become even more captivating than they already are.
The co-founder of Skybound recently shared more detailed information about his vision for Optimus Prime and the other Transformers.
I’m a huge Transformers fan, and we always knew Daniel was signed on for 24 issues. Honestly, I, along with the editors Sean Mankiewicz and Ben Abernathy, spent the last year really trying to convince him to keep going – we were all loving his work on it. It really was one of my favorite books each month! It was a shame to see him go, but when the chance came up to take over, I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve been into Transformers my whole life, and the idea of actually *writing* the book just sounded like a blast.
Kirkman Has Plans for Eventual Transformers Expansion
What does the future hold for Transformers? Quite a lot, actually – and that’s likely an understatement considering Kirkman’s talent and vision. The path he intends to take with the franchise fully justifies the high expectations surrounding this partnership.
“Initially, with the Energon Universe, I believed Void Rivals would satisfy that creative need,” Kirkman explained. “I aimed to create a book similar to Transformers, featuring fresh characters and concepts. However, whenever I included a Transformer in Void Rivals, it actually made me even more enthusiastic about that series. I knew I’d want to pursue this eventually, but honestly, I’m quite busy, so I was hesitant.” Kirkman continued, “But then, when I learned that Dan Mora would be the artist, I realized I couldn’t resist any longer. I had to make it happen.”
However, Kirkman isn’t planning to drastically change anything that’s already in place, at least not initially. He’s focusing on building upon what exists instead.
To start, the aim is to maintain consistency,” he said. “I believe my individual personality and writing style will naturally emerge, regardless of my intentions. While some variations are inevitable, the primary objective is to ensure a smooth and effortless transition.”
And so, Transformers #25 will begin a fresh chapter, guided by the creative team known for delivering impactful stories in the comic book world. This new direction will bring a new era and core values to the series, all built by the same talented individuals.
Transformers #25 is scheduled for release on Oct. 8, 2025 from Skybound Entertainment.
