The feeling of Halloween is all over Disney+. Although the reboot didn’t do well in cinemas over two years ago, it’s now one of several scary titles owned by Disney that have recently become popular on streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, the 2023 supernatural horror comedy movie is currently No. 5 on Disney+’s Top 10 Overall list. But that’s not all viewers are enjoying! The 2003 movie version of The Haunted Mansion ride is close behind at No. 6, and several other spooky favorites are also popular: Hocus Pocus 2 is at No. 2, Twitches at No. 9, Halloweentown II at No. 4, and Halloweentown High at No. 7.
Haunted Mansion, directed by Justin Simien, features LaKeith Stanfield as Ben Matthias, a scientist who now leads ghost tours. He’s brought in to help Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (Chase W. Dillon) get rid of the ghosts haunting their house. The movie also stars Owen Wilson as Father Kent, Tiffany Haddish as Harriet, and Danny DeVito as Bruce Davis. Jamie Lee Curtis appears as Madame Leota, and Jared Leto plays the Hatbox Ghost.
Haunted Mansion Director Is Proud of the Reboot Despite Box Office Failure
Even though viewers generally liked Haunted Mansion – Rotten Tomatoes showed an 84% audience approval rating compared to a 38% score from critics – the film didn’t perform well financially, bringing in only $117.5 million. This wasn’t enough to cover the $150 million it cost to make. Still, the director of Haunted Mansion is happy that audiences enjoyed the movie, saying he was “really proud of the audience scores.” He explained that test screenings allowed him to understand audience reactions and influence the film’s development in positive ways.
Simien went on to say, “No matter what people think of the film – even those who loved it and had a good time watching it – I’m really proud that it features a relationship between a Black man who’s learning to understand his emotions. The whole movie depends on him being able to connect with those feelings and build a bond with a boy who lacks a father figure, someone to care for and support him. While that might seem like a simple thing, it’s not a story you see very often, and that really resonates with me and what I look for in films.”
Despite the disappointing box office results of Haunted Mansion, Disney still plans to create more films inspired by its theme park attractions. Projects like the Jungle Cruise sequel are still in development, along with movies centered around the Epcot mascot Figment, Space Mountain, and Tower of Terror. The company is also working on turning rides based on its popular franchises into films, with plans for Avengers and Avatar to be featured in future expansions of Disney California Adventure.
The Haunted Mansion and Haunted Mansion are available to stream on Disney+.
