New Nintendo Switch Release Has Given The Legend of Zelda Fans Hope

The recent release on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 has excited The Legend of Zelda fans. As many know, 2026 will mark the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, which began in 1986 with the original game’s release on the Family Computer Disk System in Japan. It later came to the NES and Western markets a year after. This initial release sparked one of the most successful and beloved franchises in gaming history. While Nintendo hasn’t officially announced any plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary, fans expect a special event, considering Nintendo’s history of marking major milestones for its biggest series.

Before that, Nintendo recently launched Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. These are updated versions of the two beloved games originally released on the Wii. While the remasters aren’t perfect and have a few strange downgrades, they largely stay true to the originals and offer a welcome improvement. This has Nintendo fans looking forward to what might be coming for The Legend of Zelda next year. Since Skyward Sword HD came out on Nintendo Switch in 2021, there’s been speculation about remasters of Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and The Wind Waker.

“Gives Me Hope”

I’m seeing a post on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page that really has me excited: “Galaxy 1+2 on Switch gives me hope for Zelda 40th Anniversary.” And honestly, I feel the same way! They reworked the textures and improved the resolution on both games – one of them was *already* re-released with 3D All Stars, and the other was pretty much considered lost for years. That really sets a good precedent for 3D Zelda games, in my opinion. I’m old enough to remember getting that GameCube disc with four Zelda games on it! Now, I’m more confident than ever we’ll see another Zelda collection in 2026. I used to think it would just be Wind Waker HD + Twilight Princess HD in 4K 60fps… but with the movie coming out, I’m starting to think they might even include a version of Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask too.”

As we’ve seen, this post is currently the most popular on the Nintendo Switch 2 Reddit page, meaning a lot of Nintendo fans feel this way. Many comments echo this same idea. However, one commenter pointed out that Nintendo hasn’t really made a big deal out of the series’ anniversary recently-not since the 25th anniversary, that is. The 30th and 35th anniversaries passed without much celebration, so there’s no certainty the 40th will be special, especially considering Nintendo likely has even bigger plans for the 50th anniversary.

Nintendo’s upcoming movie is a major factor supporting a big push for their 40th anniversary. Although Nintendo hasn’t always focused on coordinating promotions like its competitors, it will likely want a special Zelda product available around the time the movie comes out. Missing this chance would be a significant oversight.

With that covered, please share your thoughts in the comments below, or discuss it with others on the ComicBook Forum. What are you hoping to see for the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda next year?
