The series is set in the challenging and unpredictable world of the 1990s US Marine Corps-a time when it was still against the rules to be gay in the military-and follows Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer), a young man unsure of his path, and his best friend Ray McAffey (Liam Oh), whose father was a highly respected Marine. They join a varied group of recruits and, together, they deal with the challenges-both physical and emotional-of boot camp. As they push each other to their limits, they form surprising friendships and discover who they really are.
